Chelsea Clinton: I could maybe run for office one day

My basic take on the Chelsea Clinton speculation has been that she spends way too much time on Twitter offering her political opinions to not be thinking about a run for office one day. But she’s been asked about her plans many times and always denies it. Today Chelsea changed her tune a bit. She told the Westchester Journal News that if the right opportunity came up, she might consider it:

Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of former president Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, said she wouldn’t rule out a run for office herself, and said her mother has not spoken with her about a potential presidential run in 2020.

“I think if someone were to step down or retire and I thought I could do a good job and it matched my talents, I’d have to think if it’s the right choice for me,” Clinton said in an interview ahead of her upcoming book appearance in Eastchester.

But this portion of the interview sounds a lot more hesitant about the possibility of running. In fact, this is pretty much the sort of thing she’s said many times before when asked:

A record number of women are running for office this year, many of them inspired by your mother’s run and the results of 2016 elections. Why haven’t we seen your name on the list?

I don’t have any plans to run for office, but it is something I think about as I hope every young person thinks about it. If you care about what’s happening in the world, you have to care about running for and holding elected office. I hope it’s a question that we ask ourselves. For me, I live in a neighborhood in the city and in a state where I feel my family, and what I hope for the world, is well-represented…

For now, I am really focused on trying to make the change I want to see in the world through my work in the foundation, my writing and my teaching

Here at HotAir we’ve written quite a few posts about Chelsea’s political future. Last year, she told the Today show she had “no plans” to run. And a few months ago, Jazz wrote that maybe it was time to stop asking her. But I’m pretty confident this small hint that maybe she’s open to running at some point will lead to a lot more questions about it.

This video portion of the interview is all about her new book and Twitter trolls and doesn’t contain the quote about running for office.
