Remember when secession was treasonous? Now it's all the rage

I’m old enough to remember when Democrats were shocked… shocked, I say, when disaffected conservatives suggested things along the lines of Texas seceding from the nation. It was, we were assured, treason! Ah… good times, my friends. It took less than 24 hours after Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election for liberals in California to decide that splitting from the nation wasn’t such a bad idea after all. “Calexit” is swiftly taking over social media.

After Donald Trump won the race to the White House, people across California took to social media Tuesday night to call for “Calexit” (or California exit), recalling Brexit, Britain’s push to leave the European Union.

As the topic continues to trend on Twitter, Californians in favor of seceding from the US will gather November 9th on the steps of the capitol in Sacramento.

The group leading the charge, Yes California Independence Campaign, assembled long before Trump’s surprising victory. Its aim is to hold a referendum in 2018 that, if passed, would make California an independent country.

This fringe idea has indeed been around for a while but nobody in any serious position of power has paid much attention. Far more common is the suggestion that California break up into anywhere from two to six separate states. And no, I don’t expect that to happen either. But the realistic prospects of these proposals really aren’t the point here. The fact is that every time Conservatives have been unhappy with anything taking place over the last eight years and suggested something radical in response we have been repeatedly informed that they are unamerican, racist, homophobic, or – yet again – treasonous.

And yet now that the worm has turned, all of those lofty principles have gone up in flames faster than a cop car in Oakland. While Tea Party marches on the national Mall based on policy differences were racist and xenophobic, blocking traffic and busting up the town because you don’t like the results of an election (which are being contested by nobody) is now the patriotic move of the day.

So should we dismiss this petulant scheme of allowing liberals to take California and CalExit the union? Let’s not be too hasty here.

If I may be so bold as to say, we shouldn’t immediately toss out every crazy idea that comes down the pike without thoughtful examination. We’ve heard from several Democratic talking heads that now is the time for people to come together on issues where we can agree. Perhaps this is one of them? If the Democrats and liberals truly want California to split off from the United States, surely we can round up a few conservatives who think this is just a jolly good plan. If you love something, set it free. Let’s get on board with giving Hollywood their wish and setting them free from the United States.

Best of luck, guys. Oh, by the way… there will now be a 3000% import tax on movies.
