Victory!

One of the most vicious lines of attack on pro-life activists has been the attempt to strangle pro-life ministries and pregnancy centers.

I can’t find strong enough terms to describe how vile these attacks have been and how demonic the impulse to actively work to increase the number of abortions and reduce the number of live births.

I understand those who want to preserve a “woman’s right to choose;” what I don’t understand is why the only acceptable choice for a woman weighing the possibility of having an abortion is to destroy their child’s life.

Pro-life ministries are all about helping women facing this difficult choice and helping them not only choose life but also deal with the financial burden that an unexpected pregnancy can impose on a woman. They exist to help women who choose life. Few acts are more compassionate and loving than helping a struggling parent get on their feet and focus on raising their beautiful child.

Still, leftists hate to see a baby born, and in several states (including my own), lawmakers have labeled pro-life ministries as frauds and pushed to outlaw their work.

The reasoning is simple: pregnancy care=abortion and pro-life ministries don’t promote abortion but rather embrace childbirth and help mothers cope with the difficulties that come with raising a child.

Since these ministries don’t promote abortion, they are frauds. Pregnancy care should be reserved for the butchers of Planned Parenthood.

In Illinois, the Thomas More Center sued on behalf of pro-life ministries and just scored a major victory, which we can hope is replicated elsewhere. This is no sure thing, but we should embrace progress where we find it.

(December 11, 2023 – Chicago, Illinois) Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul has agreed to an order permanently prohibiting the State of Illinois from enforcing a law that declared pro-life speech to be a “deceptive business practice” and defined as “consumer fraud” the sharing of certain information about the risks of abortion. Thomas More Society attorneys today filed, together with the Attorney General, a Joint Motion to Enter an Agreed Order, imposing a Permanent Injunction on the Attorney General. The Joint Motion was filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, for the signature of U.S. District Judge Iain D. Johnston.

In July, Thomas More Society attorneys sued the Attorney General over the law—known as Senate Bill 1909, or SB 1909—representing the pregnancy center umbrella group National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA), along with Illinois pregnancy centers Women’s Help Services and Relevant Pregnancy Options Center, and sidewalk counseling organizations Pro-Life Action League and Rockford Family Initiative. The Agreed Order provides for a full recovery of attorney’s fees by Thomas More Society.

It looked inevitable that Illinois was going to lose the case in court, so the AG folded his cards and settled the case. The settlement creates a permanent injunction that prevents the AG from enforcing the law.

The Thomas More Society has an explainer about the Illinois law, which is similar to others that have been passed or promoted in other states. It really is based on the idea that telling people that choosing life is committing fraud, and hence an attack on religious liberty and free speech.

Not that the Left cares about that. They want dead babies.
