Congratulations to this morning’s Democratic guests on the Sunday shows on having been spared the burden of spinning two political fiascos instead of one. If not for progressives finally caving on the bipartisan infrastructure bill on Friday, today’s top story would be the humiliating failure of Biden’s party to govern effectively. Instead the top story will be the humiliating failure of Biden’s party to avert a 13-point shift towards Republicans in Virginia and New Jersey on Tuesday night. Biden advisor Cedric Richmond will be on “Face the Nation,” “State of the Union,” and “Fox News Sunday” to herald passage of the infrastructure bill as a momentous triumph and to wave off the results in VA and NJ as a blip that certainly doesn’t tell us anything about the midterms. Virginia’s two Democratic senators, Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, are also booked to spin Glenn Youngkin’s shocking win and to grumble about House progressives having bottled up the bipartisan bill for just long enough to seal Terry McAuliffe’s defeat. Kaine will chat with “Face the Nation” while Warner speaks with “State of the Union.”

Two stars of the center-left are also featured today, one very old and the other brand new. James Clyburn, the number three Democrat in the House, will be on “Fox News Sunday” to discuss infrastructure and Virginia. He won’t have much that’s interesting to say about the former; even if he thinks the reconciliation bill is doomed, his leadership position prevents him from being candid about it. But he might have some notable thoughts about how the party’s leftward drift is playing with swing voters and what they should do to counter it. Remember, it was Clyburn’s timely endorsement of Biden in South Carolina last year that prevented an avowed socialist from becoming the Democratic nominee instead. Elsewhere, New York City’s new mayor-elect, Eric Adams, will chat with “State of the Union” about his plans to revive post-pandemic NYC and his coming battles with the progressive city council. Adams has already positioned himself as the “face of the new Democratic Party,” a liberal but one who’s pro-cop and pro-business and not invested in the left’s culture wars. Party leaders will be glad to have him on national television this morning after the debacles in Virginia and New Jersey.

Finally, two anti-Trumpers are scheduled to discuss this week’s electoral results and whether Youngkin’s victory means Republican voters are ready to pivot from Trump to post-Trump. Liz Cheney will talk with “Fox News Sunday” about those subjects and her work on the January 6 committee while Larry Hogan guests on “State of the Union.” The full line-up is at the AP.
