Oh, my gosh.
We've got another one of those mayors on our hands, and is he ever the poster child for progressive politicians.
Hizzoner's name is Michael O'Connor, and he's the mayor of Crazytow...wait. Check that.
Frederick, Maryland - a town of about 80K people, with a median household income of almost $90K. It was founded in 1745. The county, also named Frederick, went for Kamala Harris with a convincing 53% majority of the voters - a pretty solid and expected sort of blue Maryland result.
Mayor O'Connor, in the best tradition of emotive, virtue-signaling elected officials, held a press conference to calm and soothe the frightened residents of his fair city after the election results were finalized and, to the horror of all, the Bad Orange Man won.
Hizzoner knew someone had to step up, take the reins, and issue the pablum required to mollify the by-now terrified MSNBC-addicted sheep in his flock. He rose to the task.
Where do we get such...well, 'men' would be a little strong.
Frederick Mayor Reassures Citizens Regarding Another Trump Presidency
Frederick, Md (KM) During a news conference at City Hall, Frederick Mayor Michael O’Connor tried to reassure citizens concerned about a second Trump Administration. “While we cannot predict every policy or action this administration may take, we’ve seen enough to know our path forward here in Frederick is clear: we will be steadfast in ensuring that our city continues to be a place where everyone feels safe, respected and protected over the coming four years,” he said.
President-elect Trump has said he will round up the immigrants who are here illegally and have committed crimes. For local immigrants who are concerned, the Mayor had this message. “The Frederick Police Department, in particular, is committed to assuring all residents feel safe in reporting crime, and know they will not be questioned about their immigration status. We refuse to aid and abet outside agencies attempting to detain, deport or remove any resident from our community,” he said.
...On another topic, Mayor O’Connor says he’s heard concerns from the LGBTQ+ community about being targeted during a second Trump term. He assured them they are safe in Frederick. “The Human Rights Campaign released their 2024 Municipal Equity Index. And for the seventh consecutive year, Frederick earned the highest score possible, a perfect 100 for our ongoing efforts to ensure equal treatment of members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer community,” the Mayor said.
Oh, warm fuzzies, crab cakes, and hot cocoa for everyone.
Frederick residents slept well abed that night, be they illegal or gay or non-binary or trans - all thanks to those soothing words of affirmation and right of place in the arms of the city. Safe at last from threatening MAGA hordes, rampaging and waving American flags, with YMCA blaring from truck speakers, sent straight from the White House to round them up.
Then the good public servant took it upon himself to go a bit further.
Unlike the mayor of Denver calling upon his citizens to form resistance crowds to foil deportation goon squads attempting to remove the criminal illegal aliens from their neighborhoods, Mayor O'Connor is choosing a different path.
Yes, he's still utilizing citizens to fight The Bad Orange Man, but instead of their physical selves, he's picking the tax dollars out of their wallets.
In response to President-elect Trump’s national immigration policies, Frederick Mayor Michael O’Connor pledged to carve out space in his local budget for a 'Legal Advocacy Fund.' STORY: https://t.co/fRbJv31OWk pic.twitter.com/ruXOOOh0BJ

The local budget, funded by tax dollars, will be raided to siphon money off to pay for illegal immigrants' legal fees through grants to organizations already working with the border jumpers.
DOESN'T THAT SOUND GREAT?
In response to President-elect Trump’s national immigration policies, Frederick Mayor Michael O’Connor pledged to carve out space in his local budget for a 'Legal Advocacy Fund.' As Trump promises to carry out mass deportations, the fund would use tax dollars to pay undocumented immigrants attorney fees.
“Ensuring they have the legal support they need to stand strong and remain in this community they have chosen to call home,” O’Connor said.
O’Connor said he intends to allocate the money to organizations already providing similar legal services, helping them expand the number of people they’re able to support. Although, he’s still determining the exact dollar amount to set aside.
You'd imagine the mayor's flock would be all for it, especially a group who had to be publicly comforted by an elected official over a national election.
Lo and behold - a few of his sheep seem to have a couple of brain cells still functioning. Fleetingly, they remembered that there are cold, hungry, and homeless Americans going without in their own country who might need a helping hand. And could quite possibly make the case that they should be taken care of first.
...“I don't like the idea. I'd rather our taxpayer money go towards American citizens,” Frederick resident Rachel Pett said.
What's absolutely astonishing is that there is building consensus in cozy Frederick that maybe illegals should be paying their own damn legal bills.
...But everyone was against their tax dollars footing the bill.
...“You break the law, it's just what happens. Nobody helped me pay for my attorney fees when I break the law. So, why should we be paying for theirs out of taxpayer money?” Ryan Head, another Frederick resident, questioned.
Echoing residents’ concerns, taxpayer advocate David Williams weighed in.
“This comes at a cost and this could be a very large cost for Frederick, and quite frankly, Frederick can't afford it,” Williams said. “Taxpayer money should be going towards infrastructure and the basic needs of the community. This is not a basic need of a community of Frederick.”
Well, huh.
It looks like Hizzoner wasn't as adept at reading a room as he thought, not realizing that Kumbayah smack only goes so far - like, right up to where he's taking cold, hard-earned cash out of your bank account for someone else who shouldn't be here to start with.
Mayor O'Connor did some tap-dancing to explain the proposed fund was structured to cover the legal expenses of 'covered any resident.'
Citizens aren't falling for the sanctuary city in the tailpipe trick.
...Williams warned that the fund could represent a significant financial burden for Frederick. “This isn’t about compassion—it’s about creating a sanctuary for illegal immigrants at taxpayers’ expense,” he argued.
The mayor’s office maintains that the fund would support “any resident,” but the language and intent seem clearly focused on protecting undocumented immigrants from potential deportation.
The heat is on the mayor and his fellow resistors in the state. In Frederick, the city council meetings as this proposal gets debated are going to be LIT.
In other Maryland counties and cities, the big talk is followed by a tacit admittance that resistance, for all that it sounds tough...
...Earlier that same week, Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman voiced similar concerns.
“We will do everything we can to make sure that people have legal representation, people have services and if people are deported we will be providing services to families when their breadwinner leaves,” said Pittman.
...“The federal government will prevail because it is against the law to harbor people who are in this country illegally,” she said, adding that resistance will put Maryland’s public safety and federal funding at risk.
“The federal funding will ultimately dry up and they’re going to be stuck supporting these massive amounts of illegal aliens, including the thousands that are criminals, and it’s going to create an untenable situation for the leadership and for the communities,” said Smith.
...is going to be futile and really, really expensive.
Buckle up.
