VA legislature hanging in the balance

For all the positive signs sanity may be returning to a large swath of the country, and for all the donor money flowing into GOP coffers elsewhere, none of that seems to be true in the Old Dominion State of Virginia. When election night 2021 wrapped up, the GOP had eked out a slim majority in the House (49-46), while Democrats held the Senate (22-18). VA House reps serve 2 year terms and senators serve 4.

The Election Day 7 November, 2023 cycle promises to be an even bigger and more expensive bloodbath than 2 years ago because the races are playing with new maps which have wreaked havoc with open races.

…With all 140 House and Senate seats on the ballot Nov. 7, individual Democrats raised a combined $15 million while Republicans brought in about $10.6 million between July 1 and Aug. 31, according to an analysis released Saturday by the nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project.

…Both chambers are up for grabs in elections playing out on new legislative maps that created far more open seats and uncertainty than usual. Republicans are defending a narrow majority in the House (49-46), as are Democrats in the Senate (22-18).

The big money is guaranteed to bombard Virginians with TV ads, mailers and door-knockers through November. Early voting begins Friday.

Big Democratic bucks are pouring in and, so far, are blowing the fundraising doors off of the Republican efforts, especially with the help of one deep-pocketed Dem sugar daddy. Those are awfully nice to have, no?

…Democrats benefited from massive donations from Charlottesville investor Michael Bills, who during the last period dumped $3 million into Clean Virginia Fund, a climate group that mostly bankrolls Democrats along with a few Republicans who have bucked utility giant Dominion Energy. That comes on top of $3.8 million Bills gave to the fund earlier this year — and the $1.6 million that his wife, Sonja Smith, donated to Democrats or allied groups.

It’s extraordinary that a single individual has kept them ahead of the Republicans,” longtime Richmond political analyst Bob Holsworth said of Bills, noting that Democrats also led Republicans in small donations, which is considered a sign of grassroots support.

Taken together, Democrats running for Senate raised $7.5 million between July 1 and Aug. 31 while their Republican counterparts raised $4.9 million. The Democrats’ Senate candidates also led their GOP rivals in cash on hand heading into September, $7.2 million to $6.6 million.

VA Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s star power – along with his presidential run flirtation – has kept Republican donations afloat, but not at the pace they need to be to compete, and, to date, Democrats have handily outraised Republicans in the House races.

Republicans also have to worry about the legislature slipping out of their hands for another reason – the judiciary in Virginia is elected by that very body. As my friend Hans Bader (Liberty Unyielding) pointed out in an email, things have already taken a dire progressive turn in the Democratic primaries. That bodes ill for the entire judicial system – and by extension the rule of law – in VA if the Democrats win both chambers to take control.

In Virginia, the legislature elects the judges, so there will be a judicial bloodbath if the Democrats win control of the legislature. Many moderate and conservative judges will be replaced by progressives. Even some old moderate Democrats who are tough on crime might be replaced.

…Mainstream liberal Democrats are being replaced by left-wing Democrats, due to the 2023 primary results.

In northern Virginia’s Fairfax County, moderate state judges elected with the support of moderate Democrat Chap Petersen and mainstream liberals like George Barker and Richard Saslaw could be replaced by left-wing judges preferred by incoming left-wing state senators like Stella Pekarsky, who ousted Barker in the 2023 Democratic Primary. Senate Majority Leader Richard Saslaw is retiring, and moderate Democrat Chap Petersen was defeated by progressive Saddam Salim in the 2023 primary. Incoming Democrats like Pekarsky are well to the left of the Democrats they are replacing.

Petersen angered progressives by opposing school closings and mask mandates. He also opposed censorship backed by progressives and supported the mainstream liberal Fairfax prosecutor, who was defeated by George Soros-backed Steve Descano. That in turn led to the left-wing Loudoun County prosecutor, Buta Biberaj, donating money to defeat Petersen (Biberaj prosecuted the father whose daughter was raped by the dress-wearing boy in the school bathroom for his angry outburst at a school board meeting, the father just pardoned by Governor Youngkin).

Our Ebola’s godfather is a retired Marine Corps LtCol, as well as a NW VA resident. He has been despondent at what is happening there. I quizzed him for his take, and he said (in agreement with Hans) that the margins are razor thin, and hampered by those clustered votes in the red red rural areas. They are drowned out by Beltway noise, the left-leaning suburbs, and the college towns.

…The democrats want to take the house and hold the senate to make Youngkin a lame duck until they run Spanberger for governor. Although Winsome Sears vs Spanberger will be a doozie.

…Virginia is sliding slowly into the abyss. It an east coast liberal cancer spreading slowly down from Massachusetts. I would love for Virginia to be a bulwark and stop it but the metastasis near the Beltway only encourages all the university towns.

This is not to say that Democrats aren’t feeling so secure they can’t stoop to their usual dirty tricks. Even as I was corresponding with Hans about “incoming left-wing state senators…Stella Pekarsky” ( see above), Luke Rosiak at The Daily Wire broke news that Pekarsky and her supporters had been up to some pretty blatant election interference.

Some skunks never change their stripes – just their job descriptions.

Virginia Democrat Used Gov’t Position To Play Role In Reprimand Of Her Conservative Opponent, Records Reveal
A conservative history teacher is running for office. After a Democrat operative complained to the school about her tweets, it coordinated with her political opponent on the investigation.

…The records show a Pekarsky donor sent Centreville High School Principal Chad Lehman a complaint objecting to conservative social media posts the history teacher made as part of her campaign. Lehman forwarded the complaint to the school board’s Assistant Superintendent Penny Gros, who said she would seek guidance about what to do. That guidance appears to have come from none other than Pekarsky, and it was followed by a memo reprimanding Perry and threatening her job.

“Your behavior negatively impacts the goals of this department and others,” the reprimand said, citing the campaign posts. “Any action that brings the school system into disrepute may be just cause for dismissal.”

Experts said the conduct of Pekarsky and taxpayer-funded employees could constitute serious misconduct intended to impact the election, saying it is improper for individual board members to be involved in the discipline of specific teachers — much less their own campaign opponents.

…Lehman again forwarded the email to Gros, and calendar entries obtained by The Daily Wire indicate that she within an hour was meeting with Pekarsky to discuss Perry. Gros’ calendar shows a “Phone Call: Stella (re: Julie Perry)” for 4:00 to 4:30 that day, according to emails and calendar entries. And at 4:29, Gros replied to Lehman that she was ready to discuss how to proceed, saying, “I am available if you are.”

A FOIA request for references to Perry in Gros’ account showed no evidence that she consulted anyone else other than Pekarsky for “guidance” on the matter.

The next week, Lehman summoned Perry to a meeting in which Hall’s complaint and the fact that a CPS complaint was filed were used as evidence that she had brought the school system into “disrepute,” even though CPS dismissed the complaint, according to a summary memo that Lehman placed in Perry’s personnel file.

The reprimand ordered Perry to avoid any posts on social media that reference her teaching position.

“Moving forward, you must avoid social media posts that draw a connection to … your role as a teacher at Centreville High School,” it said. (Pekarsky’s own website says she is a teacher, even though, according to public records, she does not have a teaching license.)

This entire report is gobsmacking corruption.

Now, there’s a delegate I absolutely adore in the VA House. His name is Nick Freitas and his straight talking has earned him bazillions of fans, including myself.

We need to support these guys across the board. And be all in for those GOP newcomers, like Julie Perry, running against the villains – the Pekarsky progressives of the state.

Otherwise – if elected with a majority – blatant electioneering mobsters like Pekarsky will be electing judges for Virginians. Who needs Soros prosecutors when the criminals are picking the judges?

How ’bout them apples?

Them apples are rotten to the core.
