Treasury finally coughs up Hunter Biden's suspicious activity reports

Well, well, well, what have we been hearing today?

I’m just cynical enough to think this timely release is because the last thing Janet Yellen wants is Congress crawling up her staircase for her role in SVB’s downfall. Or looking too deeply into the San Francisco Federal Reserve, which was supposed to oversee and inspect that bank.

But I am a skeptic.

This tussle with Yellen’s department goes back at least a year. Rep James Comer (R-KY), looking into the authenticated Hunter Biden laptop, had asked for potential suspicious activity reports (SARS) last May. Yellen’s Treasury basically told him to climb a rope, and by July he was using harsh language.

A House Republican accused the Treasury Department in a letter Wednesday of running interference for the White House in an effort to stymie efforts to investigate Hunter Biden’s finances.

Rep. James Comer, the ranking member of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, cited a June 13 phone call in which “Treasury officials informed Committee Republican staff that they will not provide SARs to Committee Republicans unless Democrats join the request.”

“Treasury is refusing to release suspicious activity reports connected with Hunter Biden or his family and associates—including the President,” Comer wrote in his letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

Comer first requested records related to potential suspicious activity reports, known as SARs, on May 26, and gave the department a deadline of June 8. He said in his letter Wednesday that the Treasury has yet to turn over the documents. Suspicious activity reports are filed by financial institutions when clients make large cash transactions or transfers that could signal criminal activity, such as tax evasion or money laundering, although many such transactions are not improper.

Treasury continued to blow him off, even when the various mea culpas emerged that it was, indeed, Hunter’s laptop, and despite Republicans retaking the House in November’s elections. Rep Comer tried again, and in January the answer was still the same.

Nyet, buck-o. Whacha need that for anyhoo, dude?

On Mar 6, Comer decided he’d had it up to here with the Treasury secretary and set a hearing date so he could let fly.

A top House Republican investigator set a new hearing this week to blast the Treasury Department for failing to hand over suspicious activity reports linked to Hunter Biden following more than a year of the Biden administration dragging its feet.

…“Biden’s Treasury Department continues to make excuses for its failure to provide the suspicious activity reports that are critical to our investigation of the Biden family’s business schemes,” Comer said over the weekend. “We are concerned the Treasury Department is acting in bad faith to produce these documents to the Oversight Committee when we know that it has already produced them to another congressional office. At next week’s hearing, a Treasury Department official can explain to Congress and the American people why the department is hiding critical information.”

The Republican-led committee said Treasury Department official Jonathan Davidson will be called to testify on Friday and that “at the hearing, the committee will examine the justifications Treasury officials have provided the committee about its failure to produce requested documents and examine legislative solutions to ensure Congress has timely access to suspicious activity reports.”

Then, as if by magic, this happened today. Weird, no? Like a milagro or something.

The Treasury Department has agreed to let House Oversight Committee members review suspicious activity reports pertaining to President Biden’s family, panel Chairman James Comer announced Tuesday.

The records submitted by banks to the US government may contain new bombshells on the first family’s murky foreign income and the millions reaped by first son Hunter Biden and first brother James Biden in countries where their powerful relative held sway.

“After two months of dragging their feet, the Treasury Department is finally providing us with access to the suspicious activity reports for the Biden family and their associates’ business transactions,” Comer (R-Ky.) said.

“It should never have taken us threatening to hold a hearing and conduct a transcribed interview with an official under the penalty of perjury for Treasury to finally accommodate part of our request.”

Comer said he’d already gotten one document on Monday and it was an eye-opener -with a tantalizing new twist to it.

…Late Monday, Comer confirmed that he had received the Bank of America records for one Hunter Biden associate, a former federal official named John Robinson “Rob” Walker.

“We discovered that [Walker] got a $3 million wire two months after Joe Biden left office [as vice president in 2017], and then the very next day, from that account … they started wiring money to Biden family members, plural,” Comer told Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom”. “And there were three different Biden family members that received a cut from that $3 million, including a new Biden family member that’s never before been included in any of these investigations.

“So our question is, what exactly did they do to receive that money? What was the purpose of that $3 million wire?”

Comer declined to identify the new Biden relative implicated in the bank documents, saying only: “They’re a Biden.”

What a tangled web. If any of you have yet to read Miranda Devine’s Laptop From Hell, I can highly recommend it. I have never in my life seen so much blatant grifting, in documented, shameless financial razzle-dazzle. The scale of it is amazing.

As James Comer says, these people don’t DO anything…

…“The media says this is a Hunter Biden investigation,” Comer said Tuesday. “This is an investigation of Joe Biden, and we’re investigating the Biden family, and again, after this new batch of information, it expands. There are more family members involved in this than just the president’s son.”

Comer added that the committee “can’t identify any business” purpose for the wires, saying the money apparently went into Biden family members’ personal accounts.

“They don’t manufacture anything, they don’t sell anything, they don’t own any real estate. We don’t know what the business is,” he said. “My theory is, it’s influence-peddling, and if so, that’s wrong.”

…anything but perpetually enrich themselves. And they do so working with the sketchiest or outright most hostile regimes to American interests possible.

I really can’t wait to hear more.

Let ‘er rip, Rep.
