What, what, WHAT? Another Democrat ducking a debate seems to be the status quo this election cycle, but in this instance, the debate seems to have already been agreed to by both parties. So, what’s going on in the VA-07 race that precipitated the sudden change of heart? And, gol-lee, Nell, will ya look at that!

It’s another toss-up in a formerly “leans Democratic” district…

…where a Democratic incumbent – former CIA officer Abigail Spanberger – is fighting for her political life against a charismatic, dynamic, young Republican challenger named Yesli Vega, who also happens to be an auxiliary police officer.

…As Republicans nationally are focusing more on rising crime rates, Vega, a member of the Prince William County Board of Supervisors and an auxiliary deputy in the Prince William County Sheriff’s Office, talked about her career and criticized Spanberger for accepting a donation from a PAC tied to New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the most vocal progressives on Capitol Hill.

“My opponent has no shame. She will look you in the eyes and tell you that she supports the police, that she’s for law and order, but yet where was she when the men and women of law enforcement were being demonized?” Vega said. “She sold us out, and I say us, because, yes, I am a law enforcement officer, even though they try to hide that, too.”

Biden won the district in 2020, but Glenn Youngkin took it in 2021. For all Spanberger’s harping on abortion access as if it were the number one issue on every voter’s mind, she has to be cognizant of the fact that Del. Guzman’s explosive comments about refiling the punitive parental incarceration bill (for NOT allowing the state and school system to dictate how you raise your child) are pure ballot box poison in a state chock-full of blistering mad parents. Vega wasted no time issuing a blunt statement, and it’s a beaut.

Spanberger herself wasted no time backing out of a previously negotiated and scheduled debate, on the flimsiest of excuses – “Oh, there’s a Right-wing moderator!” – igniting a firestorm of its own. People immediately saw through the subterfuge. Duck and run for cover like a coward.

Glenn Youngkin will be campaigning with Yesli Vega tonight in Fredricksburg, and what I wouldn’t give to hear the barn burners at that rally. I’ll bet it’s going to be pure fire. Virginia really has a chance to pull out a couple of huge upsets this cycle, thanks in large part to their fantastic slate of phenomenal rising young Republicans. Also, truth be told, in large part due to their being so impressive, it makes their opponents’ moral bankruptcies, incompetencies, and dangerous, ludicrously progressive policies loom even larger in the face of unforced errors committed by surrogates. The Democrats have no answers, no excuses, and nowhere to hide. This is who they are and what they’ve done.
