Read this before you eat anything else today

Here’s a new medical study that was worth the long wait until Friday. And perfect timing for Sunday’s National Ice Cream Day.

A Japanese scientist has determined that a whopping good dish of ice cream for breakfast is excellent for the brain. The most important meal of the day and it’s good for your head. Perfect!

I knew it. I knew it. I told my mother so many times. Well technically, I did not claim that ice cream for breakfast was good for me. I just said I wanted it.

Professor Yoshihiko Koga of Kyorin University did the study and reports that eating ice cream right after waking up results in heightened instances of alertness and mental performance. Everyone wants that, right, especially if you drive to work?

Who doesn’t want to become even smarter by eating a favorite food first thing in the morning? And Japan makes some really good cars and other excellent foods. So, this has to be true.

We’ll leave digging into the science to that newly-energized crowd of Washington journalists, who never thought of fact-checking the Obama administration. Ice cream for breakfast could be one of those stories that melts if examined under too bright a light. And since we really like ice cream, we’ll believe what we want to believe.

The professor compared the brain activity of people who’d been fed ice cream immediately upon waking up with the brain activity of some poor subjects who did not have ice cream for breakfast.

He found that the breakfast ice-cream eaters displayed better reaction times and could process information better than those without the cold treat. Everyone needs to process information faster, for sure.

Further research into the the ice-creamed brain activity also found that morning ice-cream eaters had increased high-frequency alpha waves. That sounds really excellent. Alpha waves come with heightened states of awareness and alertness, which everyone certainly needs.

Even though you can’t see them, these alpha waves thingys also help reduce mental irritation, which many of us could use at work. So probably ice cream breakfasts could also help boost productivity.

Just to be sure, the professor fed some newly-awakened research subjects large drinks of cold water instead of ice cream. Their mental alertness went up too, but nowhere near as much as the ice creamers.

Now, of course, there will be health nuts who did not eat ice cream for breakfast today who point out the huge amount of sugar in regular ice cream and how that’s a serious threat for diabetics and heart attacks.

Fine, so we’ll add fruit to the ice cream. Fruit is good for you. Bananas, for instance, have vitamins B6 and C, potassium, magnesium. Also folate, which sounds important.

Those healthy folks can munch their Cheerios and be much less alert all over the breakfast table.
