Brits dump EU; Cameron resigns, Trump praises

In a stunning electoral upset the voters of Great Britain repudiated their political elites, their mainstream media and the British intelligentsia by choosing to leave the European Union.

As a result of the dismissal of his personal plea for British voters to choose to remain in the EU, Prime Minister David Cameron has announced his resignation. “This ship needs a new captain,” the Tory leader said in a gracious and humble speech in front of the iconic door at 10 Downing Street. His eloquent speech spoke of the beauty and power of democracy and the duty of elected officials to respect the voice of the people.

We should be proud of the fact that in these islands we trust the people for these big decisions.

We not only have a parliamentary democracy, but on questions about the arrangements for how we’ve governed there are times when it is right to ask the people themselves and that is what we have done.

The British people have voted to leave the European Union and their will must be respected.

I want to thank everyone who took part in the campaign on my side of the argument, including all those who put aside party differences to speak in what they believe was the national interest and let me congratulate all those who took part in the Leave campaign for the spirited and passionate case that they made.

The will of the British people is an instruction that must be delivered.

The final results were close but a huge turn-around from the conventional wisdom over the past several days which predicted up to a 5 to 10 point win for the “Remain” movement.

From our American political perspective, the vote is a direct repudiation of President Barack Obama who arrogantly threatened to send the UK to “the back of the queue” on trade negotiations if they voted to leave the EU.

Meanwhile, the more populist, nationalist, protectionist leanings of GOP upstart Donald Trump’s policies are reflected inthe UKIP-led Brexit movement. He made brief remarks when he arrived this morning in Scotland to open a Trump golf course there:

He also delivered a statement praising the vote via Facebook:

So far, no official reaction from President Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton.
