Republicans have a razor-thin majority in the House of Representatives. Former President Trump has a message to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). He wants her to back off.

MTG has held a potential ouster over Speaker Mike Johnson's head for weeks. For the second time in two weeks, Trump voiced his support for Johnson. MTG has not forced a vote on her motion to vacate the speakership on the House floor. 

Speaker Johnson went to Mar-a-Lago about two weeks ago to meet with Trump. During that time, Trump voiced support for Johnson's performance as speaker. He also noted he gets along well with MTG. Both opinions can be true at the same time. 

“We’re getting along very well with the speaker and I get along very well with Marjorie," Trump said. The former president added that Johnson was "doing about as good as you’re going to do and I’m sure that Marjorie understands that, she’s a very good friend of mine and I know she has a lot of respect for the speaker.”

Trump again voiced support for Johnson on Monday night during a radio interview. The former president talked about a range of issues after his day in court. He defended Johnson and he did not criticize Republicans who voted to support Ukraine. 

“Well, look, we have a majority of one, OK?” Trump said. “It’s not like he can go and do whatever he wants to do. I think he’s a very good person. You know, he stood very strongly with me on NATO when I said NATO has to pay up … I think he’s trying very hard.”

Trump praised Johnson for securing part of the aid for Ukraine in the form of forgivable loans and he repeated his calls for Europe to “pay up.”

His call for Europe to "pay up" isn't new. He did that during his presidency and Europe did just that, at least those in NATO. NATO members made good on their financial pledges at the insistence of Trump. Last week Trump hosted Polish President Andrzej Duda for dinner. It is reported that the two men spoke about Ukraine, among other things. 

Trump is a realist. He's been president and he knows how to work with a speaker. He worked well with Paul Ryan, though many conservatives had no use for Ryan. But, Trump and Ryan passed major tax legislation that benefitted people at all levels of income. Politicians don't have to like other politicians to get work done on behalf of the American people. 

Trump is pleased that the Ukrainian aid is partly in the form of a loan.

The foreign aid package allows for the seizure of $5 billion in Russian central bank assets to help rebuild Ukraine when the war concludes — and another $9.5 billion for Kyiv in the form of a loan.

“I said, ‘Make the money in the form of a loan,’ and they to a certain extent have done that,” Trump said during his Monday night interview, before claiming: “The war would’ve never happened if I were president.”

“Europe should be paying for this also at the same level as us — and they’re not doing that,” the former president added. “Europe is $100 billion behind us.”

MGT led the opposition to the bill last Saturday, though nearly 80% of the funds go to replenish U.S. weapons stockpiles. She called on Johnson to resign, saying he betrayed America. Russian media also attacked Johnson. It said that Johnson has "the look of a traitor." 

“Mike Johnson’s speakership is over. He needs to do the right thing, to resign, and allow us to move forward in a controlled process. If he doesn’t do so, he will be vacated,” Greene said on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”

Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) introduced an amendment to ensure the U.S. loans to Zelensky are used to pay down the national debt. 

The two separate statements in support of Speaker Johnson are a strong signal to MTG to cool it. Trump doesn't want more speaker drama as he goes into the general election in November. There are enough distractions for him to deal with. The Republican circus in the House is not helpful to Trump or any other Republican running in November. 

I think MTG is angry that she is not considered a possible pick as Trump's running mate. She's worked hard to ingratiate herself with Trump and spends time at Mar-a-Lago. She's a bomb thrower, though, and Trump doesn't need a running mate for that. She can generate headlines for herself but her record in the House is one of a backbencher. Trump's running mate needs to compliment his personality, not mimic it.

Look no further than the motion to vacate. MTG has no plan if it is brought up for a vote and goes against Johnson. It will be as it was when Rep. Matt Gaetz led the ouster of Kevin McCarthy. There was no plan, just internal drama. The bomb throwers are not helpful. It is usually mostly all about them.
