Mayorkas Met With 'WhipGate' Border Patrol Agents in Del Rio, Refused to Apologize

DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas took time out from his busy schedule of ignoring the Biden border crisis and went to Del Rio, Texas Wednesday. He met privately with the Border Patrol agents who were involved in the incident known as WhipGate. He did not issue an apology to the agents caught up in the phony scandal.

The lives of some Border Patrol agents were forever changed when a progressive activist posted on social media about a horse unit of the Border Patrol managing a crowd of Haitians attempting to illegally cross the southern border. That was in 2021. They waded across the Rio Grande River to the Texas side. The horse unit was called in for assistance. Along the way, photos were taken of an encounter between the horse unit and the Haitians. The activist started a story that went viral and it was a lie meant to make the Border Patrol look bad.

The Border Patrol agents were suspended when false accusations of whipping the illegal immigrants went viral. At the time, the photographer who took the photos of the incident spoke out and said that there was no whipping taking place by Border Patrol. The double reins they used on horseback were to control the horses, not whip people. Nonetheless, those who were determined to smear Border Patrol as the bad guys in the Biden border crisis moved ahead. At the time, Joe Biden assumed the agents were guilty of the phony accusation and declared that they would pay for their actions. Mayorkas initially came down on the side of the Border Patrol agents but soon switched his opinion to coordinate with the president and his administration who were busy convicting the agents before an investigation was opened.

Mayorkas, at the time, was an example of cowardice. Instead of having the backs of the agents in his department, he threw them under the bus for political expediency. It shined the light on the problem of low morale within the Border Patrol. The Border Patrol agents know that Mayorkas does not have their backs. It’s all politics for Mayorkas.

So, Mayorkas met with agents involved in the phony whipping story. They have been exonerated by the investigation that was conducted. There was no whipping, the report said, as was apparent all along. Yet, there was no apology from Mayorkas.

In September 2021, the number of Haitians crossing the southern border overwhelmed Border Patrol agents. There were as many as 10,000 some days. It was an all-hands-on-deck situation for law enforcement. The Del Rio Sector was ground zero. One progressive activist in Texas started a phony story on Twitter that soon went viral and the careers of the agents involved suffered. Where do they go to get their good names back?

The incident proved to be a low point for relations between the administration and the Border Patrol – who were already dealing with a historic migrant crisis still ongoing today. Former Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz had backed his agents and Fox reported how he had fumed over the administration’s failure to come out in support of them.

Mayorkas has since come out and corrected additional false claims about the incident. A White House reporter in May attempted to resurrect the claims of whipping, and Mayorkas cut her off.

“Well, let me just correct you right there because actually, the investigation concluded that the whipping did not occur,” he said sharply.

Fox News is told that while there was no apology from Mayorkas on Wednesday, the agents were able to talk to the secretary about how the incident affected their lives and careers. Fox was also told the tone of the meeting was professional and respectful.

I’m not surprised that the Border Patrol agents who met with Mayorkas were “professional and respectful.” They are the good guys. They get up and go to work to secure the border with very little support from the Biden administration. They are frequently overwhelmed due to a lack of personnel and resources to handle the flood of illegal immigrants crossing the border every week, often daily. Biden and his so-called border czar, Kamala Harris, don’t even bother to visit the border to monitor the situation. They turn a blind eye because the Biden border crisis is intentional.

Imagine how the agents must feel as they arrive for work every day. They know they are essentially on their own. They answer to Mayorkas. Mayorkas gets his marching orders from Joe Biden or those who are making his decisions for him in the White House. Does anyone think Biden calls the shots on any issue these days? Those around him are running the show. They want open borders and when Border Patrol agents get in the way, they are taken down.

The same thing happens when Governor Abbott in Texas makes moves to secure the border. Governor Abbott started an initiative called Operation Lone Star to counter the Biden border crisis in March 2021. Texas was already experiencing horrendous effects from the flood of illegal immigrants, just a couple of months into Biden’s term in office. The Central and South Americans who heard of Biden’s campaign rhetoric in 2020 began making plans to come to the U.S.-Mexico border. The same for Mexicans and others around the world. Biden promised to stop deportations and ease enforcement of the border. He promised to be a kinder, gentler president when it came to welcoming the world into our country. He did everything he could to prove he was the anti-Trump of border control. The results were immediately made clear – the Biden border crisis is a humanitarian crisis and a national security crisis.

The border communities in Texas and Arizona have suffered. Landowners face the destruction of their property by illegal immigrants moving through on their way to wherever they are going. Some homeowners have been threatened or hurt by those moving through. They are on the hook to pay for additional security measures for their families and their property. Social services meant for residents have been overwhelmed by those who are here illegally. Hospitals are overwhelmed, as are social services for Texans in need.

The Texas Legislature has set aside billions of taxpayer dollars to try to secure the border. Governor Abbott sends illegal aliens to sanctuary cities by using funds in Operation Lone Star for bus trips. Why wouldn’t the chaos on the border continue as long as those who come here illegally receive whatever they need at the expense of American taxpayers?

Shame on Mayorkas for not showing the decency to at least apologize to people in his department after he threw them under the bus. Mayorkas is facing potential impeachment for dereliction of duty. The problem is that Republicans control the House but not the Senate or the White House. Mayorkas is carrying out the orders of the administration. Democrats don’t show any interest in secure borders. They won’t vote to impeach Mayorkas. Nothing will change until there is a Republican administration in place. Republicans must choose their presidential nominee carefully with an eye on who can beat Joe Biden. Biden has to be shown the door in 2024. It’s past time for him to retire to his beach mansion in Delaware and spend time with his family.
