Look for more of this. More awards shows for various sectors of the entertainment world will likely be canceled as long as the war between Israel and Hamas rages on.

“This does not feel like a moment for a global celebration.” Indeed. MTV is cancelling its Europe Music Awards (EMA) ceremony due to security concerns and out of respect for what is going on in the Middle East. But, mostly security concerns. The shindig was scheduled for November 5 in Paris. The organizers read the room.

A statement from a Paramount spokesperson reads, “Given the volatility of world events, we have decided not to move forward with the 2023 MTV EMAs out of an abundance of caution for the thousands of employees, crew members, artists, fans and partners who travel from all corners of the world to bring the show to life.”

The statement continues, “The MTV EMAs are an annual celebration of global music. As we watch the devastating events in Israel and Gaza continue to unfold, this does not feel like a moment for a global celebration. With thousands of lives already lost, it is a moment of mourning. We look forward to hosting the MTV EMAs again in November of 2024.”

France has its own security problems, especially in Paris. Macron put the country on high alert six days ago after a teacher was stabbed by a 20-year-old radical Islamist. There were several bomb threats to airports across the country. Security protocols were drastically increased at Mipcom, the annual international TV and film market in Cannes. The Louvre museum and Versailles Palace were both closed Saturday after bomb threats.

France deployed 7,000 soldiers after a Chechen man fatally stabbed the teacher and severely wounded three other adults at a school in Arras in northern France.

On Friday evening, Gérald Darmanin, the French interior minister, said he believed there was a link between the attack in Arras and the attacks by Hamas terrorists on Israel. He said the suspect was being closely monitored by the DGSI, the country’s internal security services, who had tapped his phone. “He was in contact with his brother,” Darmanin said in a television interview.

Perhaps Paris wasn’t the best choice in the first place, as it turns out. Radical Islamic terrorist extremists who are triggered by what is happening between Israel and Hamas isn’t anything to take lightly.

It is the 30th year of the celebration, a major awards ceremony in the industry. It was to be broadcast live on MTV in more than 150 countries, streamed on Pluto TV globally and on demand on Paramount+. It was to be the first time it was held in Paris since 1995.

Monday two men were murdered in Brussels by a gunman claiming to be a supporter of ISIS, so there is that, too.

On an related note, the Golden Globes have donated $75,000 to the Committee to Protect Journalists since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war. The Golden Globes expressed “profound sadness and horror” over the war unfolding. Journalists are among the dead.

“As we have done previously during the Afghanistan and Ukraine conflicts, we remain steadfast in our commitment to support the courageous journalists who take tremendous personal risks to shed light on events and keep the world informed,” Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne said in a letter sent to her membership and obtained by The Hollywood Reporter.

Viewership of annual entertainment awards shows is down, some drastically down. Americans don’t have much interest in recent years. The shows are overly long and, frankly, boring. The addition of so many political rants by award winners turns off the general audience, too. People tune in to see their favorite entertainers and if their favorite movies or television shows or songs win awards. They aren’t there for politics.
