U.S. patrols prepare "for the unknown" while Americans say enough is enough

A majority of Americans do not want a greater number of illegal migrants in the United States. Americans are looking at scenes of migrants gathering along the southern border and feel a sense of alarm and urgency, according to the latest polling. Three quarters of Republicans do not want more immigration. More than a third of Democrats do not want more immigration. These poll findings come as Title 42 ends and officials brace to face the unknown.

Americans don’t want large flows of people coming into the United States, they support the military aiding the Border Patrol, and they are not sure that Joe Biden is the right president for the task at hand. This is bad news for a man running for re-election. The survey was of more than 1,000 adults. The poll was conducted by Reuters/Ipsos nationwide. 40% approve of Biden’s overall performance as president, while only 26% approve of his handling of immigration. A total of 54% oppose increasing the number of immigrants into the United States.

If Biden is losing to Trump by 7 points according to the latest shocking WaPo/ABC News poll and to DeSantis by 7 points now, what will the numbers look like as the full scope of the end of Title 42 hits at the southern border? It’s very early yet and there is no guarantee that illegal immigration and the Biden border crisis will be a top issue, as it is now, in the election. But, if it is, there is no more stark contrast on the issue than between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. Trump ran on securing the border in 2015. He talked about illegal immigration when he announced his candidacy. When Joe Biden ran in 2020, he talked about ending deportations and told anyone who wanted to apply for asylum to come. We have seen the results of both approaches.

Biden has scrambled to do too little too late in preparation of the end of Title 42 today.

In an eleventh-hour move to staunch the influx on Wednesday, Biden revised the rules to require migrants to request refugee status online or in one of the countries they transit through before they reach the US border.

The poll shows that Americans are most worried about the economy, but see immigration as another major threat, with only 26 percent of the US public confident in Biden’s approach to people flows.

This is dragging down the president’s approval ratings to 40 percent.

In the WaPo/ABC News poll, only 38% said they would vote for Biden in 2024. Yikes.

Of all times to put new policies in place, this is when Biden chooses to do it. On the eve of Title 42 going away and tens of thousands of migrants just waiting across the border, it is hard to imagine a worse time for major adjustments. The administration had two years to do that. This is madness.

To discourage illegal crossings, the Biden administration now plans to implement sweeping new regulations this week that will deny asylum to most migrants caught crossing.

The administration aims to quickly screen migrants for asylum under the new standard and, if they fail, deport them right away.

However, limited U.S. resources to deport migrants could stifle the effectiveness of the measure, which mirrors similar policies under former president Trump, that were blocked in the courts at the time.

Asylum officers were being trained on the new standard on Tuesday but some staffers have pushed back for its hasty rollout and others are concerned it undercuts access to asylum services, according to three sources familiar with the matter.

‘People are livid,’ said one Department of Homeland Security official, who requested anonymity to discuss the matter.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas warned the days and weeks ahead have the ‘potential to be very difficult.’ Joe Biden warned that the border will be chaotic “for a while.” What a couple of understatements. Difficult and chaotic, indeed.
