Lame Duck Lori isn’t happy that Texas Governor Greg Abbott is taking her at her word and acting like Chicago is a sanctuary city where all are welcome, regardless of legal status in this country. Governor Abbott has been busing illegal immigrants to Chicago as he has to other big blue cities that love to virtue signal about how open and welcoming they are. Just like Washington, D.C., and New York City, Chicago is the destination for some of the overflow of illegal immigrants who are apprehended in Texas. Lightfoot sent a letter to Abbott Sunday asking him to stop sending them.

Just like when D.C. Mayor Bowser and NYC Mayor Adams complain about the arrival of illegal immigrants in the cities, it’s all a bit rich. Abbott is exposing them as the progressive hypocrites they are. When push comes to shove, these mayors don’t want to be troubled with finding resources for those coming off the buses or planes in their sanctuary cities.

There is just no more room in all of Chicagoland, according to Lightfoot. All the shelter space and resources have been used up, you see. After all, Chicago has received 8,000 illegal immigrants since August 2022. Are you kidding me? Texas receives that number in a day. Right now some major Texas cities are under state of emergency declaration because of the flood of illegal immigrants into the cities.

El Paso, for example, declared a state of emergency Monday which will allow them resources to open up additional shelters. It is in preparation for the ending of Title 42 on May 11. There are already hundreds of illegal immigrants sleeping on sidewalks downtown and the Opportunity Center for the Homeless is overflowing.

Mayor Oscar Leeser held a news conference Sunday to explain the emergency declaration. “We are getting prepared now for what we call the unknown,” Leeser said.

Meanwhile, in her letter to Abbott, Lame Duck Lori called the practice of bussing illegal immigrants out of Texas “inhumane and dangerous.” I would argue that a porous border, such as the Biden border crisis has deliberately produced, is inhumane and dangerous to both the migrants and the residents of border communities, as well as the Border Patrol agents and other law enforcement tasked with enforcing the law. Law enforcement is overwhelmed. Border communities don’t have the resources to house, feed, and clothe thousands of migrants in a week’s time. Local hospitals are overwhelmed by illegal immigrants in need of medical care.

In her letter, Lightfoot also said nearly all the migrants who arrived in Chicago were “in dire need” of food, water and clothing, adding that many needed extensive medical care. She also said some migrants were in active labor, and some were victims of sexual assault.

“None of these urgent needs were addressed in Texas,” Lightfoot said. “Instead, these individuals and families were packed onto buses and shipped across the country like freight without regard to their personal circumstances.”

Lightfoot said she is sympathetic to the challenges that border states and cities face, telling Abbott, “I would rather work with you than against you,” but called the situation “completely untenable.”

“Chicago is a welcoming city, and we collaborate with county, state, and community partners to rise to this challenge, but your lack of confederation or coordination in an attempt to cause chaos and score political points has resulted in a critical tipping point in our ability to receive individuals and families in a safe, orderly, and dignified way,” Lightfoot said in her letter. “We simply have no more shelters, spaces, or resources to accommodate an increase of individuals at this level, with little coordination or care, that does not pose a risk to them or others.”

Welcome to the party, Mayor Lightfoot. It takes some kind of audacity to whine about facing a problem she brought on herself by criticizing Greg Abbott for handling the crisis at the border as best as he can while virtue signaling that she would never be so cruel as to move illegal immigrants away. Progressives think they are so morally superior to conservatives. They aren’t quite so welcoming when they actually have to do it.

To say that illegal immigrants are not being taken care of in Texas is a lie. It’s an insult to all the workers, paid and volunteer, who do the work and to the Texas taxpayers who pay for the resources used. Texas taxpayers have paid billions of dollars to do the job the federal government is supposed to be doing. Border security is a federal responsibility.

Lame Duck Lori should call her pals Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and demand that Secretary Mayorkas do his job. While she is still in office, she should direct her comments to the White House, not Governor Abbott. She has until May 15 to do that.
