Does a Vice President of the United States really make a surprise appearance anywhere? Given the security precautions that have to be taken and scheduling arrangements, it’s hard to believe that even Kamala has that kind of freedom in where she shows up. Granted, Kamala keeps a very light schedule but calling her appearance at a pro-abortion rally in Los Angeles a “surprise” seems farcical.

Ever since the Dobbs decision last year, Kamala has made it her mission to rail against pro-life Republicans and rally abortion supporters to demand lawmakers pass federal legislation codifying Roe v Wade. If only the vice president had such passion for other areas of her portfolio, like, oh, I don’t know, maybe border security. But, no such luck.

Watch for Democrats to beat this drum through the 2024 presidential election. They plan to do what they did during the midterm elections because it worked for them. Republicans put up some less-than-electable candidates during the primaries and then when the general election rolled around, it was well within their reach to win the midterm elections. Abortion was a central issue. They painted conservatives as out-of-touch and extreme. Democrats got away with that because of independent and suburban voters – the voters that both parties have to win over to win elections – who do not accept restrictions like a 6-week ban on abortions as reasonable. To be clear, voters think there should be restrictions on abortions and it is the Democrats who are out of step. The majority of voters think a 15-16 week limit is reasonable on abortion access. A six-week ban is one that goes into effect before most women even realize they are pregnant.

So, when the Texas judge ruled that the FDA did not properly approve the abortion drug mifepristone, some twenty years ago, and issued a ban on its sale, women organized rallies to protest the ruling. At about the same time as the Texas ruling, a Washington State ruling came down that countered the Texas ruling. The Texas judge is a Trump appointee and the Washington judge is an Obama appointee, for those keeping scores at home. And you should keep score. Elections have consequences and this kind of fight is proof that it is important to which party is in charge of the Senate when it comes to judicial confirmations.

A court of appeals ruled in favor of keeping in place the drug’s availability with some new restrictions, such as no sales by mail. The case will eventually be decided in the Supreme Court. Probably. The timeline is not known yet. In the meantime, the Supreme Court temporarily blocked restrictions on the pill.

The rallies commenced on Saturday. Kamala popped by the rally hosted by the Women’s March in Los Angeles.

Saturday’s nationwide rallies were sparked by the U.S. Supreme Court’s actions the day before, when the high court intervened to delay rule changes that would have limited the way the abortion drug mifepristone could be used and dispensed. The limits were paused while the court reviews the case more thoroughly.

And so this is a moment that history will show required each of us — based on our collective love of our country — to stand up, and fight for, and protect our ideals. That’s what this moment is,” she said Saturday, speaking to several hundred demonstrators from the steps of City Hall. “When you attack the rights of women in America, you are attacking America.”

It is interesting to note that the crowd assembled was not as large as in past demonstrations. The crowd size is reported to have been a few hundred people. In the past, thousands would have shown up. The Women’s Marches always drew big crowds.

Even in New York City, the crowd was small.

Demonstrators in New York City stood behind a sign with a four-letter expletive directed at Texas, where a federal judge set off the latest salvo in the battle over abortion. They held signs urging the government to defend medication abortions.

But the crowd was modest, attracting a little more than 100 people outside the picturesque public library along Fifth Avenue.

Still, the demonstrators attracted looks from passersby along the busy thoroughfare, some briefly joining the group to lend their voices.

“It can be hard to get people out, because people are being bombarded with all kinds of assaults on their bodies and people are tired and poor,” said Viva Ruiz, who said she helped organize the rally.

“The news cycle is so fast that when one thing happens something terrible happens the next day. So it’s hard to sustain the momentum or the energy for people to be on the streets,” Ruiz said.

“Bombarded” by what kinds of assaults, exactly? Do you mean the physical danger they face on the streets of New York every day due to the rise in crime? Abortion is still legal in New York and the governor is stockpiling the pills, so it’s all good for abortion advocates. She is probably referring to the fatigue that the residents of blue cities feel just trying to get through another day in a crime-ridden city.

The Biden administration is the most abortion-friendly administration in American history. We shouldn’t be surprised when Kamala shows up at a rally, introduced by the progressive Mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, and instructs the audience to “fight” for their right to abortion. Abortion is legal in California. Governor Newsom is stockpiling the pills, too. Nothing has changed for women there. By the way, in today’s political atmosphere, isn’t telling an audience to fight interpreted as incitement? Or is that only from a conservative speaker? Yeah, that’s a rhetorical question.
