Is Stacey Abrams turning into a perpetual candidate? Georgia Democrats are worried that she is going that route. They think that she has become too much of a celebrity and not enough of a serious political candidate.

That is a legitimate concern. Abrams is a hero to the progressive left. She ran against Governor Brian Kemp in 2018 and lost. She cried voter suppression and refused to concede the election. Her victimhood was gold to the left and they embraced her. Hollywood turned her into a celebrity and she loves it. She and Kemp had a re-match of their race in 2022 and she lost again, by a wider margin that time. Yet, she persists. Abrams recently told Drew Barrymore that she plans to run again for political office, though she didn’t offer up any specifics.

Why can’t she just go back to writing her erotic romance novels? She was successful in doing that. She used a nom de plume but she could probably make more money if she used her name now. She has accepted a job with an environmental group pushing to ban gas stoves. It’s called Rewiring America and it is a dark money environmental advocacy group pushing for the ban of gas stoves and other regulations. She is joining as senior counsel. Her job is to help “launch and scale a national awareness campaign and a network of large and small communities working to help Americans go electric.”

“Growing up on the Gulf Coast, not far from a significant concentration of the petrochemical industry, I’ve seen the environmental and health injustices that visit communities isolated from political power and economic opportunity,” said Abrams. “We are at an inflection point, where families in the South and across the country live too close to the economic edge, and every dollar saved now changes their future. But few understand how much money they can save with a little help to upgrade their homes and vehicles. I’m excited to join Rewiring America to share the benefits of electrification and ensure families get their fair share. I look forward to working together as we build the tools that will transform everyday Americans from energy consumers to energy moguls in their own communities.”

“Rewiring America anchors our work in how the decisions we make around the kitchen table about the machines we use can save us money, make our homes and communities healthier, and reduce climate-harming emissions,” said Rewiring America co-founder and CEO Ari Matusiak. “Stacey Abrams’ career of public service has hit all these themes and more. She’s a brilliant and visionary organizer who will accelerate our work and expand the audience for the benefits of electrification — the most equity-centered climate strategy we have.”

According to the press release, Abrams is all about electrification now.

“She will also guide the organization as it builds the tools and capacity to connect Americans and their communities to machines, installers, Inflation Reduction Act incentives and jobs in the clean energy transition,” the group added.

Rewiring America, which describes itself as the “leading electrification nonprofit, focused on electrifying our homes, businesses, and communities,” was founded in 2020 with the goal of broadly electrifying the country in an effort to curb climate change. The organization has also pushed for major environmental programs.

“I’m excited to join Rewiring America to share the benefits of electrification and ensure families get their fair share,” Abrams said in a statement. “I look forward to working together as we build the tools that will transform everyday Americans from energy consumers to energy moguls in their own communities.”

Does she have experience in the electrification business? It sounds like a giant grift to me. YMMV. Rewiring America is working in conjunction with the Inflation Reduction Act, which many of us think is a giant slush fund for the Green New Deal 2.0. Abrams has a talent for raising and making money. She isn’t very good at managing money, though. Her latest campaign ended up in debt to the tune of $1M despite raising a record amount of money for a gubernatorial campaign. Where did it all go?

Last week Abrams spoke to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about her next steps. She wants to “address critical needs and achieve long-term change. Political office is simply one tool for the issues I am committed to tackling, Abrams said, and I will engage all sectors to serve.”

Georgia Democrats are not happy that she plans to run again. They say it’s time for her to step aside and let new voices and fresh faces emerge.

However, AJC’s Greg Bluestein reported that several Democrats are not excited at the prospect, writing, “But interviews with more than three dozen Democratic officials, party leaders and activists suggest she may not have the same unified support she enjoyed after her first defeat to Kemp in 2018.”

“Like many other Democrats, [Chair of Monroe County’s Democratic Party Yvonne] Stuart praised Abrams’ work mobilizing voters and laying the groundwork for the party’s 2020 gains. But she said she worried that Abrams lost partly because ‘she fell into the trap of becoming too much of a celebrity’ in between her campaigns,” Bluestein wrote.

Stuart said, “I do believe there might be another charismatic Democrat that can take us all the way in 2026.”
