Manchin, Sinema high five each other in support of the filibuster in Davos

The World Economic Forum is meeting in Davos, Switzerland this week. The people gathered there include some of the world’s top business leaders and the wealthiest of investors. Lots of celebs show up to earn some activist cred, and politicians come to sit on panels and discuss the topic du jour. Two of those politicians from the United States are Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema.

The two senators participated in a panel Tuesday and a clip from it made the rounds on social media. Manchin and Sinema do a little high-five over their continued support for the filibuster as it now stands in the Senate.

Sinema was talking about how Pelosi, and now McCarthy, are using the my-way-or-the-highway approach to politics. She said there is value in those politicians who go against the grain and cause roadblocks to such an approach to governing. A bit self-serving, to be sure, since she was sitting next to Manchin and made a motion while speaking that indicated she was thinking of the two of them. But, when she finished her thought, Manchin chimed in, “We still don’t agree on getting rid of the filibuster.” “That’s correct,” said Sinema. Then the high-five happened. Looks like they were sending a clear message to Chuck Schumer that neither of them has changed their minds about nuking the filibuster in the Senate.

Senator Sinema took some incoming fire for her furry looking vest thing she was wearing during that panel discussion. That she wore such a vest or that she received lots of snarky criticism for her wardrobe choice is not a surprise. Sinema marches to the beat of her own drum in politics and in her fashion choices.

The Editor in chief of Jezebel asked why she was dressed as a sheep:

There’s this from Oliver Willis:

And this from a writer I’ve never heard of but she describes herself as a MAGA Block Queen, so there’s that:

Progressives still hate Sinema and the long knives were out for her on her very presence at the world forum. Who does she think she is? I’ll tell you, Sinema’s a whole lot more interesting than, say, that tired old retread John Kerry and his arrogant rambling statements on climate change. Kerry is the ultimate limousine liberal. He wants to sit in a room with other wealthy people and come up with ways to make the lives of ordinary people worse in the name of saving the planet. Yet, his life doesn’t change. He flies private, he rides in gas-guzzling SUVs, and he owns multiple homes. He’s a hypocrite. So are most of the progressives in Davos.

It looks like to me that Senator Sinema is pissing off all the right people.

Today the U.N. chief said the world is in a “sorry state”, mostly because of climate change (natch) and the war in Ukraine. News broke of a helicopter crash in Ukraine that killed more than a dozen people, including the Ukrainian interior minister.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres delivered his gloomy message on the second day of the elite gathering of world leaders and corporate executives in the Swiss ski resort of Davos. Sessions took a grim turn when news broke of a helicopter crash in Ukraine that killed more than a dozen people, including Ukraine’s interior minister and other officials.

Forum President Borge Brende requested 15 seconds of silence and Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska dabbed teary eyes, calling it “another very sad day,” then telling attendees that “we can also change this negative situation for the better.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was scheduled to address the conclave by video link as the Ukrainian delegation that includes his wife pushes for more aid, including weapons, from international allies to fight Russia. Speaking shortly before Zelenskyy is German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is facing pressure to send tanks to help Ukraine and is the only leader to attend Davos from the Group of 7 biggest economies.
