This one is just kind of fun. Imagine being elected the next prime minister of the U.K. and having a video clip surface on social media of yourself as a student. The video from 1994 shows Truss when she was a student in Leeds speaking about the monarchy. At the time, Liz Truss was not a fan of the monarchy and called it “disgraceful”. Today she went to Balmoral to meet with the Queen and be appointed by her as the new prime minister.

For the first time in her 70 year reign, the Queen received both the outgoing and incoming prime ministers at her Balmoral estate in Scotland. She remains there after her traditional summer vacation, reportedly due to health concerns. She normally appoints prime ministers from Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle. Truss is the 15th British prime minister appointed by Queen Elizabeth II. Winston Churchill was the first in 1951.

In the clip, Truss says: “I am not against any of them personally. “I am against the idea that people can be born to rule, that people because of the family they are born into should be able to be the head of state of our country, I think that’s disgraceful.”

Earlier today former Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited the Queen at Balmoral to officially give her his resignation. A little later, the Queen met with Truss. The Queen asked her to form a government. Truss becomes the UK’s 56th prime minister and its third female prime minister. Interestingly enough, all three of the females are/were from the Conservative Party. She was expected to return immediately to 10 Downing Street after her meeting at Balmoral. She delivered an address to the nation Tuesday afternoon before beginning to appoint her cabinet.

The 47-year-old Liz Truss was not always a conservative. She comes from a liberal family. In July, the University of Leeds banned staff from talking publicly about Liz Truss’s left-wing father. Her father is not pleased with Liz’s politics as an adult. Liz Truss is a former Liberal Democrat who now leads the Conservative Party.

John Truss, emeritus professor of pure mathematics at the institution, is said to be “so appalled” by his daughter’s “conversion to extreme right-wing politics” it impacts their relationship, according to one colleague.

Chancellors have now reportedly sent out an email warning staff to ignore journalists and keep quiet about Mr Truss, 75.

Ms Truss’s relationship with her father is said to have come under strain over the years due to their opposing political ideologies.

That’s a shame. Family is more important than politics. As usually happens on social media, people were quick to criticize Truss and failed to acknowledge that she was a student when she made the remarks, a much younger person.

The video from 1994 show Truss when she was a student in Leeds. People have reacted to the clip on social media with some saying the new PM, who was formerly a Liberal Democrat, has changed her views.

One person replied to the clip saying: “Queen’s been on the throne 70 years how long will Liz Truss last?” Another said: “I’d like to think people are allowed to change their views on things without being castigated for the rest of their lives.”

And another tweeted: “And does so with more sincerity and conviction than anything she’s said recently. That’s what selling your soul for power will do.”

Indeed. People change their political opinions, even political parties, all the time. Truss changed from liberal to conservative as she grew older. She held various cabinet positions under David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson. As foreign secretary she secured the release of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe from detention in Iran. She also introduced tough sanctions over Putin’s war in Ukraine. She is being dubbed the “new Iron Lady” by supporters. She was an admirer of Margaret Thatcher.

In her speech outside her new residence Tuesday, Truss vowed to tackle rising energy bills and the cost-of-living crisis in the next couple of days.

“I will deal with the energy crisis caused by Putin’s war,” Truss told reporters on the steps of 10 Downing Street.

“I will take action this week to deal with energy bills and to secure our future energy supply,” she said.

Outside her new prime ministerial home in London, Truss also said she had a “bold plan” to grow the economy through tax cuts and reform that would “boost business-led growth and investment.”

Improving health services was the third priority listed by the former foreign secretary. “I’m confident that together we can ride out the storm, we can re-build the economy and we can become the modern brilliant Britain that I know we can be,” Truss concluded.

She repeatedly said, “no new taxes” throughout her campaign. “I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy. I will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with people’s energy bills, but also dealing with the long-term issues we have on energy supply.”

Sounds good to me. Too bad our own president isn’t so concerned about finding solutions to our own energy needs.
