They aren’t wrong. More than 50 House Republicans, including top leadership, signed a letter to DHS Secretary Mayorkas in which they called him unsuitable for office. Essentially they accuse him of a dereliction of duty. Who can blame them? They stop short of calling for him to step down, which is a shame. Instead they ask for answers to a series of questions.

The letter will not change anything, unfortunately. Republican lawmakers have questioned Mayorkas and criticized him since the Biden border crisis got underway. It does no good. He ignores Congressional criticism. He isn’t going to be fired because he is doing as Biden wants him to do, which is to allow illegal migrants to cross the border and remain in the United States. DHS flies migrants into other states away from the border or puts them on busses for a ride into another state. Biden has shut down detention facilities and allows families and unaccompanied minors to remain with little or no follow-up. They may or may not receive instructions to show up at the nearest ICE office in their new location. Some are tracked electronically but not all.

Border Security Caucus co-chair Brian Babin, R-Texas., and Republican Study Committee Chair Jim Bank led the effort. Republican leadership signed on, along with about 50 other Republicans. The letter starts off by saying, “We write to address your actions to dismantle the security of our nation’s southern border and disregard for the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws.”

Signers of the letter include Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, Republican Whip Steve Scalise and House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik.

“Your actions have willingly endangered American citizens, undermined the rule of law and our nation’s sovereignty,” they write. “Your failure to secure the border and enforce the laws passed by Congress raise grave questions about your suitability for office.”

The letter is just the latest in criticism that Mayorkas and Biden have received since the announcement that DHS was ending the enforcement of Title 42 at the southern border. It’s a bipartisan effort now, with both Republicans and endangered Democrats running for re-election sounding the alarm over what will be an explosion of the current Biden border crisis when Title 42 ends in May.

The letter brings a response that DHS is planning on handling 18,000 illegal migrants per day and Mayorkas says there will be a plan in place to do so.

“We have been planning for months to address increases in migration; those that we already have experienced and those that we might experience upon an end to Title 42,” he told CBS News this week. “And proof of that is the fact that we’ve deployed additional resources to the border in anticipation of an end to Title 42. The surging of personnel, transportation, medical resources, the development of additional facilities to support border operations.”

Why would anyone believe Mayorkas? Since taking office, he has ignored the requests from border state officials and law enforcement for more personnel and resources to combat the constant flood of illegal migrants crossing into the United States. He has been a willing participant in the Biden border crisis. If Border Patrol agents are overwhelmed now, it will only be worse in May.

Border Patrol agents are doing dangerous but necessary work on the border. National Guard troops have been called in to help. Sadly, the presumed death of one National Guardsman occurred on Friday as he tried to help two migrant women cross the Rio Grande River. It’s been reported since then that the two women were involved in drug smuggling. His name has now been released, though his body has not been found. He was only 22 years old.

The humanitarian crisis on the southern border is unacceptable and unsustainable. Mayorkas is in over his head and needs to go. The buck stops on Biden’s desk and Democrats will pay a price in November for his incompetence and deliberate dereliction of duty. It’s hard to even imagine what the border will look like at the end of Biden’s term in office.
