Blue on blue attack: Georgia Dems slam visit from Biden and Harris as “insufficient and unwelcome”

The White House considers Georgia as “ground zero” for voter suppression laws. Somewhere along the way, Georgia Democrats didn’t receive the memo. They question why Biden and Kamala are traveling to their state tomorrow to echo the themes of Biden’s highly divisive January 6 speech and talk up his endorsement of a filibuster carveout in order to pass voting rights legislation in the Senate.

This is a perfect example of the tone-deafness that plagues the Biden administration. Biden and Harris can’t even get on the same page as their own party activists. The push is on for passage in the Senate of the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, especially since the Build Back Better bill is stalled in the Senate, hopefully permanently stalled. The Freedom to Vote Act expands access to the ballot and protects election officials. The John Lewis Voting Rights Act restores sections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Neither bill is about election integrity reform which has been the focus of several red-state legislatures since the 2020 presidential election. Democrats don’t care about election integrity safeguards. Their focus is on passing legislation that will likely create a path for a permanent Democrat majority in Congress. It is a raw power grab and if they have to destroy the filibuster in the Senate, so be it. Biden was once against destroying the filibuster, back during his days in the Senate, but now that he’s in the White House, all bets are off.

Joe and Kamala are scheduled to travel to Atlanta on Tuesday. Democrats and their cohorts in the press were very excited about Biden’s horrendous speech that he delivered on January 6, as they were about Kamala’s. Biden showed some real Trump Derangement Syndrome symptoms as he repeatedly referred to the former president and begged Americans to believe that he is the duly elected president. Kamala compared the actions on January 6 with the attack on Pearl Harbor and September 11, 2001. Both speeches were missed opportunities to unify Americans as Biden pledged to do when he campaigned for the presidency. Cedric Richmond, White House senior adviser and director of the Office of Public Engagement, said of the trip to Atlanta, “We are doubling down, kicking it into another gear, we are going right to the belly of the beast, or ground zero, for voter suppression, voter subversion and obstruction.”

Not all Georgia Democrats are breathlessly rolling out the red carpet for the high profile visit. They want to know why the president and vice-president are coming to Georgia instead of staying in Washington to fight for the passage of the bills. In other words, why aren’t they staying in D.C. and doing their jobs? The White House didn’t coordinate with local Democrats, apparently, and there is no fundraising component to the visit for Democrat candidates.

On Thursday, a coalition of voting rights groups released an unusually strong statement calling a trip by Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris “insufficient and unwelcome” if the two don’t already have a veto-proof majority to pass the legislation, which is not yet in hand.

Behind the scenes, we spoke with other senior Democrats whose complaints go even further.

“Georgians know the importance of voting rights and so do the senators we elected,” said one prominent state Democrat. “Why the heck are they leaving Washington – where people need convincing to pass legislation – to come to Georgia where no one needs convincing?”

Several said they weren’t involved in the planning stages of the event, and two officials expressed privately the same frustration outlined by the coalition of activists.

“We could have told them how Georgians would feel, if only they had asked,” said one.

Others questioned why there’s no fundraising event for Georgia candidates tied to the visit. Biden raised more than $500,000 for then-Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms last year, though the donors were refunded after she decided against a run for a second term.

There isn’t confirmation that Team Biden reached out to Stacey Abrams, the pretend Governor of Georgia currently campaigning to challenge Governor Kemp in 2022. Abrams, despite her numerous flaws, has been very successful in her efforts to help Democrats win in Georgia.

The Georgia Legislature passed election integrity reforms and Governor Kemp signed the bill into law after the 2020 presidential election. Georgia delivered a Democrat majority to the U.S. Senate, thanks to the election of Senators Warnock and Ossoff. Warnock is up for re-election in 2022. Rep. Nikema Williams says she was in touch with the White House about the visit and expects a speech on what Biden and Harris plan to do to get the legislation passed. Clearly, she has never really listened to a speech delivered by either Biden or Harris. Neither are capable of laying out specific actions to make legislation happen. They speak in general terms and use a lot of highly focus-grouped phrases and words.

“I think coming to Atlanta, coming to the 5th Congressional District, I am sitting in the seat that was once held by Congressman John Lewis,” Williams said. “We’re the cradle of the civil rights movement. You don’t come to Atlanta just for another speech. This is about action.”

Biden handed over shepherding the voting rights legislation through the Senate to Kamala, since she is a former senator, and she hasn’t been any more successful in that role as she has with her other tasks delegated to her by the Big Guy. The southern border is still porous and illegal migration is still at record high numbers, foreign leaders are not embracing the Biden administration as we were told they would (America’s back, baby!), and America is very divided along political party lines. No one likes Kamala.

With voting rights legislation the new focus, Richmond says the January 6 speech by Biden was a “down payment”. The president “will build the case to the public that the foundations of the country’s democracy are under assault.” “Each time when it doesn’t happen we amplify it more,” Richmond said of pushing for action in the Senate.”

“Democracy is under assault” is ok as a slogan for Democrats but not for Republicans, apparently. The whole reason for the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill was over a perceived threat to democracy. If rioting breaks out after the results of the 2022 midterm elections come in, will the press and Democrats portray it was an acceptable reaction to a red tsunami? Or, will it be the result of rigged elections and voter suppression as it usually is called by Democrats? Democrats have a long history of protesting elections and doing their best to overturn them. Trump took their past actions and amped it up when he lost to Biden in 2020. Do we not remember Democrats storming into rooms where 2000 election results were being re-counted in Florida, trying to steal the election for Al Gore? What about after the 2004 re-election of George W. Bush when House Democrats refused to vote on the election’s certification? No one in the press batted an eye when Hillary Clinton called Trump’s presidency as illegitimate or claimed he stole the election from her. Funny how all this only runs one way, right?

Biden will extol the urgency of blowing up the filibuster in the Senate with a carve-out for a vote on voting rights legislation. Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), a White House confidant and the third-ranking House Democrat who is credited for Biden’s South Carolina primary victory and saving his presidential campaign, said that Manchin’s call for bipartisanship on a rule change is “foolishness”. Never mind that bipartisanship was what Biden ran on and his ability to work with the other side. On Sunday Clyburn said, “We just don’t have enough Democrats who are in touch with the history of this country, or they’d stop saying some of this foolishness.”

“I am, as you know, a Black person, descended of people who were given the vote by the 15th Amendment to the United States Constitution. The 15th amendment was not a bipartisan vote, it was a single party vote that gave Black people the right to vote,” said Clyburn. “Manchin and others need to stop saying that because that gives me great pain for somebody to imply that the 15th Amendment of the United States Constitution is not legitimate because it did not have bipartisan buy-in.”

Is Clyburn “in touch with history”? It was Republican lawmakers who pushed through the 15th Amendment when Democrats opposed it. Just sayin’.
