“Let’s play ball”: Boos ring out as Biden makes an appearance at the Congressional Baseball Game

It was a good night for Congressional Republicans, not so much for Joe Biden. The annual Congressional Baseball Game was held at Nationals Park Wednesday night. The Republicans versus Democrats game ended in a 13-12 victory for the Republican team. The game has taken place annually in D.C. since 1909. It was canceled in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic. Proceeds go to local D.C. charities like The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington and the United States Capitol Police Memorial Fund. It was the Republicans’ first victory since 2015 and the 3rd win in a decade.

The timing of the game was criticized as an exercise in tone-deafness. Traditionally, the game is played in the summer but this year, due to scheduling conflicts, it was played on the eve of votes on the huge infrastructure package Democrats are trying to push off on American taxpayers. Instead of remaining in session to hammer out negotiations on the $3.5T spending wish list of Democrats, along with the bipartisan infrastructure bill for a lesser amount, members of Congress were playing baseball. There is also a midnight deadline tonight to approve a resolution to fund the government before a government shutdown happens. So, there is plenty of work to keep the lawmakers busy and working late into the night.

With so much to do legislatively at the moment, moving forward with the baseball game appeared politically tone deaf. Rather than staying in session to approve a resolution to fund the government, with a midnight Thursday deadline to avoid a shutdown, both chambers adjourned in the late afternoon so lawmakers and staff could head a mile down South Capitol Street to the home of the 2019 World Series champions.

Fiscal deadlines usually spawn meetings that go deep into the night to try to bridge the divides, but not Wednesday night, not even with the prospect of a potential default on the nation’s $28 trillion debt just 19 days away that is also complicating the legislative agenda.

President Biden, it has been noted, is not aggressively lobbying members of Congress to support his administration’s reckless desire to increase taxes and spending on social engineering programs and big government cradle to grave programs. He made an appearance at the Congressional Baseball Game and his arrival brought boos from Republicans.

As the crowd began to fill the stands, Republican players arrived in force, using the same gate in centerfield and only reaching the field after walking past rows of seats. Democrats began to trickle in shortly after.

As they’ve been on the reconciliation bill, so members were clad on the field — Republicans united in custom red unis while Democrats sported a motley mix of replica jerseys representing their hometown teams.

During the team introductions, controversial Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia had her name announced but did not appear present. Some in the crowd booed her nonetheless. Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise, who was shot at a practice for the game in 2017, received the largest applause.

President Joe Biden showed up in the middle of the second inning, to huge applause from the Democratic side and more than a few boos from the Republican fans, spending a few minutes glad-handing in front of the Democrats’ dugout. He was escorted onto the field by the running presidents, massive-headed mascots who race around Nats Park to entertain fans in between innings.

Biden walked over to the GOP dugout after the third inning, earning a fresh set of boos from Republican spectators for the effort.

Imagine that. The man who has spent almost 50 years in D.C. on the taxpayer’s dime and ran for president promising to be the guy who can unite the country because of his friendships on both sides of the aisle was booed at a charity baseball game. Joe brought along ice cream to smooth things over between the deeply divided politicians. Note the presidential seal on the wrapper.

Biden’s appearance was oddly timed. He arrived during the second inning and only stayed about an hour. Before the game, four former Congressional Baseball Game players were inducted into the game’s Hall of Fame. Biden was one of the four, which also included his senior adviser Cedric Richmond, former Rep. John Shimkus, and deceased former President George H.W. Bush. Why didn’t Biden get to the park in time to take part in the ceremony? His granddaughter accepted his award on his behalf.

Rep. Roger Williams (R-Tex.), who made it into the Atlanta Braves minor league system, served as GOP manager. He used the multi-trillion proposal from Democrats to motivate his team and get ready for the November 2022 midterm elections. He connected the game with the 2022 midterm elections during the team’s final practice. “I’m deeming this game as socialism vs. capitalism.” He said if Republicans win the game, it would send a message for November. Sure, a bit hyperbolic but his job was to motivate the team. We’ll see if the Republicans have as good of a midterm election night as is being predicted, thanks to Biden’s incompetence in handling most anything that has come up, along with his basic mismanagement of government. President Unity has been a miserable failure so far.

Pelosi was at the game last night and seen on her phone for much of the game. She walked over to speak to Biden as he visited the Democrat dugout. It’s not hard to guess what her conversation was about. She may suffer a huge blow to her reputation for having mad skills in getting Democrat agendas rammed through the House. About 22 to 24 Republicans are expected to vote in support of the smaller $1.2T bill as of last night. GOP party leadership has asked them to oppose the legislation. In light of the latest developments with the progressive left, those Republican votes will probably not be enough for Pelosi to use to get the bill passed. Pelosi boasted last month to the press, “I don’t go to the floor and lose.” We’ll know today if that’s true or not.
