Legendary country singer/songwriter Dolly Parton is being honored by TidalWave Comics with her own comic book in the “Female Force” series. The series is devoted to inspirational women. Dolly certainly qualifies for that designation.
“Female Force: Dolly Parton” will be released on March 31 and the comic book is 22 pages long. It will be released in both print and digital formats. Parton has received many awards in her long career, including 11 Grammy awards. The Female Force series is described as a series of bio comics, an alternative to superheroes.
Parton joins the likes of former U.S. first lady Michelle Obama, singer Cher, women’s rights campaigner Gloria Steinem and nun Mother Teresa in having a biographical comic written about her.
“We’ve found a niche with our bio comics,” TidalWave publisher Darren G. Davis said. “There is a much wider audience for sequential storytelling than many have thought. These readers are simply looking for something other than superheroes.”
Dolly Parton is known for her generous philanthropic contributions, including providing money to fund the development of the Moderna coronavirus vaccine. She donated $1 million last year to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee for early research development with Moderna on its COVID-19 vaccine, mRNA-1273.
When her time came to get a COVID-19 vaccination, the 75-year-old Parton reworked one of her classic hits, “Jolene”, to encourage everyone to get a vaccination. She shared a video of getting the vaccination while the song played.
Dolly has turned down receiving the Medal of Freedom twice due to timing conflicts and the coronavirus pandemic when it was offered by President Trump. She said if offered the honor from President Biden, she will not accept it during the pandemic. She says there are bigger concerns now than her own personal honors. In February, she asked the Tennessee General Assembly to pull the bill that would have started the process of commissioning a statue of her. “Given all that is going on in the world, I don’t think putting me on a pedestal is appropriate at this time,” Parton said in the statement. Her humility is refreshing.
TidalWave Comics released “Female Force: Kamala Harris” last October, just in time for the presidential election in November, though the company says it was in time for her birthday. Other women honored with bio comics, not including Dolly, are mostly leftists. The company states it has an eleven-year history of profiling politicians in comic books.
“We believe that it is important for readers to have inspiring role models, to learn about extraordinary individuals that have overcome challenges to make a difference in the world. That was the thought process Darren G. Davis went through before creating the comic book series “Female Force.”
“We wanted to showcase the strong women in today’s society that have inspired generations and shaped the culture of today,” Davis said. “Kids and adults alike can look up to these women as great role models. One of the coolest things about the comic books is that we found schools using them for reluctant readers.”
Frankly, I think using comic books to educate kids is a brilliant idea. I just wish that more conservatives were profiled. Why exclude a market of up to about half of the adult population, including the parents who buy these comic books to inspire their kids?
Dolly is also receiving recognition with a limited-edition ice cream flavor made by Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream. The company teased the creation in an Instagram mosaic. Jeni’s confirmed the collab with Parton in a caption. The flavor will benefit Dolly’s Imagination Library, a book gifting program that gives free books to children from birth to age five. She started her Imagination Library in 1995 for the children within her home county. Now her program spans five countries and gifts over 1 million free books each month to children around the world. Who doesn’t love Dolly for that?
If the name Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream rings a bell – it isn’t sold in grocery stores in my area – it is because it is a favorite brand of both Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi. Jeni is a big ole Democrat donor. Remember the photo of Nancy Pelosi’s ice cream stash in her fabulously expensive fridge? The company is Ohio-based. Jeni Britton Bauer is a James Beard Award winner. Joe Biden spent over $10,000 during his presidential campaign by sending Jeni’s to donors.
You have great taste, @SpeakerPelosi. https://t.co/96cJJaBHFW

Dolly deserves her own ice cream flavor anyway. The proceeds go to her book-giving program for little ones, so that’s all the better.
