Alyssa Milano reacts to passage of Alabama anti-abortion bill, "Not one uterus"

Tuesday Alabama’s state Senate passed a bill that outlaws almost all abortion, with the only exception being to protect the life of the mother. It is the country’s strictest abortion bill. Alabama’s House of Representatives already passed the bill and now it goes to the desk of Governor Kay Ivey. Gov. Ivey said she will wait to read the whole bill before making a decision to sign it or not.

It’s been a rough few weeks for the pro-abortion crowd. Actress/activist Alyssa Milano called for a sex strike to own the conservatives in Georgia voting in favor of that state’s abortion ban, commonly known as the Heartbeat Bill, just last week. Tuesday after senators, all men, voted against an exception for rape and incest in the Alabama bill, Milano tweeted an unusual reaction.

“Not one uterus”? That is how she articulated that the photo was of only male legislators. The left reduces a woman to the sum total of her body’s reproductive organs. Then, appearing on CNN Tuesday night, Alyssa Milano declared that she and other pro-abortion activists are actually pro-life. No, really.

She admitted in an opinion piece Monday for CNN online that her sex strike idea is an attention-seeking stunt, so I suppose her tweet about a uterus falls into line with her normal thought process.

Sure, it’s been a mixed reaction, but it got the country talking about the GOP’s undeniable war on women. And let’s face it, with so much going on every day in the news, sometimes we need an extreme response to get national attention.

So now that we have your attention: Our reproductive rights are blatantly and systematically being stripped away before our very eyes. Abortion care is a normal and at times necessary medical procedure, but anti-choice activists have strategically chipped away at abortion rights and access for decades, with the hopes of overturning Roe v. Wade.

It’s a war on women, you know. A little credit is to be given to Chris Cuomo, though, as he tepidly pushed back and acknowledged that not all women support abortion rights. Pro-life women look at the issue as a war on human life, a war on babies, so to speak, not a war on women. But, hey, she got a segment on CNN, so mission accomplished.

“Look at me now, I’m on your show and we’re talking about women’s rights and how they’re being rolled back,” Milano told CNN anchor Chris Cuomo.

When Cuomo pushed back and pointed out that “a lot of women” are pro-life, including some of the co-sponsors of the “heartbeat” bill, Milano argued that she is “pro-life” as well.

“I don’t think there’s a human on the planet that is not pro-life. Nobody wants to get an abortion, nobody. We are all pro-life,” Milano said.

“But there are circumstances that we cannot avoid. There’s mother’s health, there’s just not being ready, you know, and what that means financially and for someone’s destiny. This is an economic issue. Just because there are women who don’t believe abortion, don’t take away someone else’s right.”

“Just not being ready”. That argument gets me every time. It means a pregnancy is just too inconvenient to carry out. Trying to argue that a pro-abortion stance is really a pro-life position is quite a stretch, even for Alyssa Milano.

Democrats reacted as you would expect.

The Alabama legislation is part of a concerted effort to overturn Roe v Wade. Several states have bills in the works. The Alabama bill does not charge the woman with a felony, only the doctor. As in other states, if Governor Ivey signs the bill it will set off a legal challenge.

Under the bill, a woman receiving an abortion would not be criminally liable. The doctor would be charged with a Class A felony, punishable by 10 to 99 years in prison.

The bill passed the Senate on party lines after four and a half hours of debate, with all the Republicans who were present voting for it. No Democrats voted for the bill.
