This wasn't the usual clash of police and protesters. The University of San Francisco reached an agreement with students who promised to remove their tents from campus yesterday. But when school staff showed up to remove them some of the protesters were outraged, calling the clean-up a "raid."

Susu Steyteyieh, a student organizer for the encampment, told the Chronicle that while students had planned to dismantle their tents on Monday morning, they were preempted by university staff members, who told the students they planned to store the encampment’s items — including their tents on university property. 

Steyteyieh said the encampment had not told university spokespersons they planned to dismantle the tents on Monday morning, as summer break had just begun and many of the campers were planning to go back home. 

“We had just woken up,” said Steyteyieh, who called the incident a raid. “The camp was still full. … They didn’t give us a warning.’ ”

The best part of this is when this raid that woke people up happened. Was it 6 am in the wee hours of the morning? No, it was 10 am. These lazy bums couldn't rouse themselves before 10am and then they want to whine about their camp being raided by people who were just trying to clean up their mess. 

As for the camp being full, the school says that's not true. They started cleaning up the tents because most of the students who'd been in them had gone home already as summer vacation has started.

Kellie Samson, spokesperson for the university, said accusations of officials “raiding” the tents were inaccurate. She said that most students had already left the encampment and the majority of the tents along Welch Field — approximately 50 in total — had been abandoned.

Everything is a negotiation with these activists. Even after they abuse campus rules and get their own way they have to drag this out and whine about every last detail including the fact that their 10am wakeup call was too early and didn't include a warning. Just listen to the whining.

A week ago these same campers were given a chance to vacate the campus without consequences. Naturally, they refused. In fact, they held a rally to make it clear to the administrators who was in charge.

Students at the University of San Francisco protesting the war in Gaza are holding a rally Tuesday after a deadline to vacate their encampment or face potential sanctions has passed. In a letter posted to the USF website addressed to “Member of the People’s University of Palestine,” school administrators set a 3 p.m. deadline for students to vacate the encampment.

Students who voluntarily vacate the encampment at Welch Field by 3 p.m. will face “no code of conduct repercussions for those who violated time, place, and manner restrictions,” the letter states. However, for students who do not vacate the field by 3 p.m., “there will be no amnesty and the code of conduct process for time, place, and manner violations will commence immediately,” the letter continues.

Will the students who stayed receive any consequences at all? I'm going to guess the answer is no but I haven't actually seen a story saying what the plan is. By caving on their threats to hold students accountable, the school has ensured that nothing they say in the future will be taken seriously.
