As you’ve no doubt heard by now, Mayor Adams of New York has been kicking up quite a fuss about all of the migrants that New York City is housing and feeding. And to be fair, the cost of this has been pretty significant for the city. So despite it’s reputation as a sanctuary city, Mayor Adams has been shipping some of the migrants out to other parts of the state while also demanding action from the federal government to allow the migrants who are already here to start working immediately. His criticism of Biden’s handling of the crisis led to him being dropped as a campaign surrogate a few months ago.
Meanwhile, the more rural parts of New York state where NYC has been sending migrants aren’t happy about the situation either. Gov. Kathy Hochul got frustrated a few months ago and told them to “end their bigoted policies” and accept the migrants coming their way. But the universal cry of progressivism (You’re a bigot!) hasn’t completely settled the issue. This month county executives in Erie County said they wouldn’t accept any more migrants after two sexual assaults took place in local hotels housing the migrants.
All of the pressure of dealing with this crisis has the governor and the mayor at odds with one another. Adams complained it just wasn’t fair that a tiny portion of New York state (NYC) was taking the hit for so many asylum seekers.
The White House is also thinking about doing something to relieve some of the pressure including setting up other locations where the migrants can go. One of those locations could be in New Jersey but the state’s Democratic Governor Phil Murphy is already saying there’s no room for migrants anywhere in the entire state.
Gov. Phil Murphy suggested Thursday that New Jersey does not have the resources to take an influx of migrants from New York City at the direction of the Biden administration.
The comments by the Democratic governor — who once said New Jersey would become a “sanctuary” state for immigrants on his watch — comes as the Biden administration reportedly is considering relocating migrants in New York City to the Atlantic City International Airport. The airport is one of 11 federal sites that the Biden administration has sent to the New York City Mayor’s Office that are under consideration.
“I don’t see any scenario where we’re going to be able to take in a program in Atlantic City or frankly elsewhere in the state,” Murphy said on News 12 New Jersey’s “Ask Governor Murphy.”
“You need scale, enormous amount of federal support, resources that go beyond anything that we can afford,” he said. “Putting everything else aside, I just don’t see it. I would suspect that that will continue to be the case.”
The hypocrisy here is pretty stunning. What happened to diversity is our strength and the “foundation from which we thrive”?
As we celebrate #NationalImmigrantsDay, we commemorate the grit, resilience, and contributions of immigrants – our neighbors who chose New Jersey as their home – to our own history.
Our diversity is more than our strength.
It is the foundation from which we thrive.

Murphy was outraged last year when Gov. DeSantis sent migrants to Martha’s Vineyard. He also criticized Gov. Abbott. “New Jersey stands by our nation’s values which welcome those seeking a better life with not just open arms, even more importantly, with open hearts.” Has Gov. Murphy’s heart closed?
I am outraged at Governor DeSantis’ heartless attempt to exploit vulnerable Venezuelan migrants in a political stunt designed only to improve his standing among his right-wing followers. pic.twitter.com/JwP2O4Bqqa

Before that he also jumped on the story about migrants allegedly being whipped by Border Patrol agents on horseback saying “Opening our doors to those fleeing disaster, violence, and political instability is who we are as a nation.” Of course the whipping thing never really happened. Does Gov. Murphy still believe that opening our doors is who we are as a nation? It sounds like he just said New Jersey’s doors were closed.
Opening our doors to those fleeing disaster, violence, and political instability is who we are as a nation. The images of inhumane treatment of Haitian migrants by Border Patrol are deeply troubling, and we support @DHSgov’s investigation into the matter.

I could go on but you get the idea. Gov. Murphy has been eager to preach welcoming immigrants but suddenly when there’s a crisis his state is closed. Politico’s story today ends by quoting him saying “We’ve always been a nation of immigrants, but that doesn’t mean it can be the Wild West.”
The tone of what he’s saying now is quite a bit different from what it has been for the past several years.
