This story is getting a fair amount of attention. Both CNN and the Associated Press have stories up about it. Here’s the video. You’ll see one child being lowered down the wall with a rope. When the adult tries to bring another child down the same way he drops him about 10-12 feet. That child is apparently just 4-years-old.

The incident happened last Monday near San Diego. Authorities apparently rendered aid to the child at which point they were shot at.

The incident happened around 9 p.m. on May 15, about half a mile east of the San Ysidro port of entry. Surveillance video captured the moment the child was dropped over the barrier by someone who was entering the country illegally, CPB said.

First responders who rendered aid to the injured child then came under fire.

“Agents reported hearing both the impact and ricochet of gunshots off of the secondary border barrier just north of their location,” CBP said in a news release.

Luckily, the child wasn’t hurt. According to the AP, all four people seen in the video are now in custody but it’s not clear if the two adults are the parents.

The child came with two adults, all of whom were in Border Patrol custody, agency spokesman Michael Scappechio said Tuesday. It had not been confirmed if the adults were the child’s parents or what nationality they were. It was also unclear if they would be released in the United States to pursue immigration cases or deported.

Looking at the video myself, I’m going to guess these were the parents. The second adult over the wall definitely looks like a woman and the older child seems to be waiting for her. Will they get to stay despite a) entering illegally and b) doing something that would be considered child endangerment if any American had done it?

My guess is they would have been allowed to stay prior to the end of Title 42 and all of the new attention being given to the border right now. But thanks in part to angry Democratic mayors around the country, the Biden administration isn’t as free to ignore this problem as it was for most of this year. So this week it’s harder to say what the Biden administration will do with them.

Speaking of angry mayors, Mayor Adams of New York City is still calling on the Biden administration to allow migrants to begin working immediately. He and the governor made another public plea yesterday.

Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams made passionate pleas for the federal government to expedite work permits for the 70,000 asylum seekers who have arrived in New York City…

“There are over 5,000 farm jobs open as we speak,” said Hochul. “We have more than 5,000 food service jobs right now … 4,000 openings for janitors, cleaners and housekeepers.”

At the same time, Adams is also trying to push the courts to suspend a right-to-shelter law that makes him responsible for providing food and housing for every migrant who turns up.

Mayor Adams’ legal team pushed the state Supreme Court on Tuesday to suspend New York City’s right-to-shelter law at times when the city “lacks the resources and capacity to maintain sufficient shelter sites, staffing and security” — a drastic move that comes in response to the city’s migrant crisis and which drew immediate criticism from the city’s liberal establishment…

“We are in no way seeking to end the right to shelter. Today’s action will allow us to get clarity from the court and preserve the right to shelter for the tens of thousands in our care — both previously unhoused individuals and asylum seekers,” Adams said in the written statement put out Tuesday evening. “Given that we’re unable to provide care for an unlimited number of people and are already overextended, it is in the best interest of everyone, including those seeking to come to the United States, to be upfront that New York City cannot single-handedly provide care to everyone crossing our border.

“Being dishonest about this will only result in our system collapsing, and we need our government partners to know the truth and do their share,” he added.

You have to assume that any judge in New York is going to say no to this request. Most progressives would rather see the entire system collapse than admit that promising housing to an unlimited number of people is not sustainable.
