Shooting in midtown Atlanta, police identify suspect who is still at large (Update: Captured)

Details are just coming in but what we know so far is that there was an active shooter in midtown Atlanta around 12:30 pm eastern time. One person was killed and four more were injured and taken to a hospital. Police released these photos of the suspect. In two of these photos you can see he’s holding a gun.

Someone responded to the Atlanta PD Twitter thread with this video showing a man in a grey hoodie on top of a building. Is this the shooter?

In case you’re wondering, the person who posted this video said she called 911 immediately.

Local news outlets spoke to a man who works in a building across the street from where the shooting happened. He was headed to lunch when police started warning everyone about the active shooter. He happened to be wearing a grey hoodie similar to the one in the photos of the shooter and said that police approached him to verify his identity before asking him to clear the area.

The shooting took place at a medical office.

The location of the shooting is at the Northside Hospital Midtown medical office…

A spokesperson with Northside Hospital Midtown did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The police have just identified the suspect as Deion Patterson:

Here’s the latest, including an update about that video of the man on the roof:

Atlanta Police say they do not believe that the shooting suspect is still in the midtown area. They have lifted the shelter in place advisory, but they are asking people to stay out of the midtown area while they investigate. They also say that a video that is circulating online showing a man on a roof of a building in Midtown is not the suspect…

It is believed that the suspect carjacked a vehicle near 14th and Williams street. Initially it was thought to have been found in the Smyrna area at a school. However, that is not the case. Police do not know where the suspect is at this time.

Police also said the shooter was with his mother at the time of the shooting but she was not injured and is cooperating with police. All of the shooting victims were women.

I’ll update this post as more information becomes available.

Update: Here’s a report on the carjacking. Note that the belief that he ditched the car in Smyrna turned out to be false.

Also, his mother is claiming he was angry about his medication.

Minyone Patterson – who is cooperating with police as they search for her son, Deion Patterson, 24 – appeared to blame his medication regimen for the shooting at Northside Hospital Medical Midtown Wednesday.

“The damn VA gave him some messed up medication, and all he wanted was an Ativan,” Minyone told The Daily Beast, referring to the medication used to treat seizure disorders such as epilepsy. She did not elaborate further and hung up.

So it looks like Patterson is a veteran.

Update: He’s been arrested.
