Trump: Oakland mayor's warning in advance of ICE sweeps a 'disgrace'

Today, President Trump reiterated criticism of Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf made previously by Attorney General Jeff Sessions and ICE Deputy Director Thomas Homan. Trump called Mayor Schaaf’s decision to publicly announce a coming ICE sweep a disgrace.

“What the mayor of Oakland did the other day was a disgrace,” Trump said. He continued, “Where they had close to a thousand people ready to be gotten, ready to be taken off the streets. Many of them, they say 85% of them were criminals, had criminal records.

“And the Mayor of Oakland went out, she went out and warned them all—scatter. So instead of taking in a thousand, they took in a fraction of that, about a hundred and fifty.

“They were all set. This was long in the planning and she said ‘Get out of here.’ And she’s telling that to criminals. And it’s certainly something that we’re looking at with respect to her, individually. What she did is incredible and very dangerous from the standpoint of ICE and Border Patrol. Very dangerous. She really made law enforcement much more dangerous.”

ICE Deputy Director Thomas Homan told Fox News last week that his agency had detained about 150 people in the sweep but that another 864 criminal aliens had evaded capture. He said that was at least partly the result of Mayor Schaaf’s warning. He also argued that California’s restrictions on working with ICE wound up making their sweeps more dangerous because instead of picking up people in local jails they had to go into communities and knock on doors.

Yesterday, AG Jeff Sessions gave a speech in California in which he singled out Mayor Schaaf saying, “How dare you! How dare you endanger the lives of our law enforcement officers to promote a radical, open-borders agenda.” Governor Jerry Brown responded strongly to Sessions’ speech but declined to defend the actions taken by Mayor Schaaf.

Schaaf did defend herself yesterday and responded to AG Sessions. From SFGate:

“How dare you vilify members of our community by trying to frighten the American public into thinking all undocumented residents are dangerous criminals. … How dare you distort the reality about declining violent crime in a diverse sanctuary city like Oakland, California, to advance your racist agenda…

Schaaf denied Sessions’ assertions that she endangered law enforcement officers.

“I did not intend to put the safety of law enforcement officers at risk,” the mayor said. “I was very careful in not sharing any specific information about these ICE raids that might have endangered law enforcement.”

Here’s Trump’s statement made today before the start of a meeting.
