Michael Moore is taking his act to Broadway

Michael Moore is taking a break from filmmaking to take a shot at performing on Broadway. His one-man show is called “The Terms of My Surrender” will open this August. From the New York Times:

This left-wing provocateur is not shy about his agenda, made explicit on a preliminary poster for the production, which poses the question, in all capital letters, “Can a Broadway show bring down a sitting president?”…

“It’s a humorous play about a country that’s just elected a madman — I mean, there’s really no other way to put it,” he said in an interview at Sardi’s, the theater district mainstay…

He said that he had been thinking about trying his hand at theater for some time, but the election last year of Donald J. Trump as president — which Mr. Moore correctly predicted — provided an impetus to do it now.

Deadline reports producers are promoting the show as, “a hysterical theatrical coup d’etat that takes the utter lunacy of our times and turns it into a subversive piece of theater.” Doesn’t that sound like fun? I didn’t think so either.

The last time I wrote about Moore, he was speaking in New York on the eve of Trump’s inauguration. “We’re in a very dangerous moment in history where a malignant narcissist and a sociopath is in the Oval Office,” he warned the crowd. And they seemed to eat up his speech. There’s definitely a market for a message like his in New York city.

But there’s also reason to think Moore’s audience isn’t what it used to be. He had huge success with Fahrenheit 9/11 back in 2004 but his last movie, “Where to Invade Next” grossed just $3.8 million at the box office in 2016. It’s hard to imagine the producers made back their money on that one. So perhaps there’s another reason for Moore’s sudden interest in performing on Broadway to a more select audience in progressive New York City. His appeal has become somewhat more selective.
