Nigeria's president: Boko Haram base camp has been crushed

President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria says the Islamic terror group Boko Haram has been crushed by Nigerian troops and is on the run. From the Telegraph:

A campaign lasting for months in the 1,300 square-kilometre forest in northeastern Borno state led to the “final crushing of Boko Haram terrorists in their last enclave in Sambisa Forest” on Friday, Buhari said in a statement.

He congratulated his troops for “finally entering and crushing the remnants of the Boko Haram insurgents at ‘Camp Zero’, which is located deep within the heart of Sambisa Forest”.

“The terrorists are on the run, and no longer have a place to hide. I urge you to maintain the tempo by pursuing them and bringing them to justice,” he said.

According to the Associated Press, Boko Haram is responsible for killing as many as 20,000 people and displacing millions more:

Boko Haram’s seven-year Islamic uprising has killed more than 20,000 people, spread across Nigeria’s borders, driven some 2.3 million people from their homes and created a massive humanitarian crisis. The U.N. has warned that 5.1 million people are in danger of starving in northeast Nigeria, including in areas too dangerous to reach because of Boko Haram ambushes.

The group, whose name translates ‘Western education is forbidden,’ kidnapped 276 schoolgirls in a village called Chibok in 2014. That spawned an international campaign to “Bring back our girls” which reached into the White House:

In October of 2015, President Obama deployed a small number of troops to neighboring Cameroon to help in the fight against Boko Haram. The 200 or so remaining kidnapped girls (some escaped early on and some were released in October) were not recovered during the military operation at Camp Zero. “Further efforts should be intensified to locate and free our remaining Chibok girls still in captivity. May God be with them,” President Buhari said according to the Associated Press.
