House Dems ask Nancy Pelosi for time to consider their leadership options

As Ed noted on Saturday, supporters of Nancy Pelosi are rallying to try and save her leadership position. However, a Washington Post story yesterday says a group of House Democrats have asked Pelosi to give them more time to consider their leadership options:

At least 20 rank-and-file members, including Rep. Seth Moulton (Mass.) and Ruben Gallego (Ariz.), signed the letter over the weekend in hopes of stalling the elections, which are scheduled for Thursday, according to a copy obtained by The Washington Post. The letter comes as some Democrats are privately complaining that the party has struggled to regain power since the GOP gained control in 2010.

“It is vital that our Caucus take the time to listen to the American people and learn the lessons of this difficult election in order to put our Caucus in the best position to fight the potentially dangerous agenda of President-elect Donald Trump and to have a realistic chance of taking back the House in 2018,” the letter reads.

The letter doesn’t directly say it’s time for Pelosi to go but that is clearly the implication of asking for a delay. The Post story notes that Rep. Tim Ryan was the person who originally circulated the letter asking for more time but says he removed his name, “amid speculation that he might challenge Pelosi in the upcoming race for House Democratic leader.” Politico has a follow up today that clarifies it’s not just speculation anymore.

Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) is considering challenging long-time Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi for the Democrats’ top House leadership post, as the party grapples with its Election Day debacle.

While Ryan probably can’t beat Pelosi, his potential candidacy comes as another group of roughly 30 House Democrats is seeking to postpone Thursday’s leadership elections.

A spokesman for Ryan tells Politico, “He never had the ambition to run for leader but after last week’s election results and the phone calls he had with his colleagues, he’s open to the idea.”

Pelosi’s battle to stay on top of demoralized House Democrats may explain her response this morning to the simple question, “How are you?”
