An email chain released by Wikileaks suggests that Hillary’s attorney Cheryl Mills did not want her to run for president again, possibly out of concern for the brewing email scandal.

The email exchange between John Podesta and Neera Tanden, president of the Center for American Progress, too place on July 24th and 25th of 2015. Tanden wrote to Podesta saying, “Do we actually know who told Hillary she could use a private email? And has that person been drawn and quartered?” Tanden added, “Like whole thing is f**king insane.”

Later the same day, Tanden wrote another email to Podesta saying, “I repeat, why hasn’t this person been drawn and quartered?” “I’m reading wolf hall. There is something to be said for the power of torture,” she added.

The following day, July 25th, Podesta sent two responses. In response to the question about who was responsible, Podesta wrote, “Don’t you think Cheryl?” That’s obviously a reference to Clinton’s lawyer and confidante Cheryl Mills.

Podesta sent a second email to Tanden which added, “At least we now know why Cheryl didn’t want her to run.” Again, it’s clearly a reference to Cheryl Mills and Podesta’s message implies that one of Clinton’s closest advisers thought she should not run for president again in 2016. In the context of the exchange, the suggestion is that the burgeoning email scandal explains Mills’ reluctance.

Politico asked the Clinton camp for a comment on the exchange. A spokesman for the campaign told them, “We are still not authenticating individual emails hacked by the Russian government and weaponized by WikiLeaks.” That has been a convenient way for the campaign to avoid addressing each embarrassing new release of emails.

The fact that Cheryl Mills apparently did not want Hillary to run for president because of the potential email scandal is contrary to the message the campaign his been promoting for more than 18 months. The message has been that Clinton made a decision for her own convenience which she regrets but that nothing she did was wrong. In fact, it seems one of her closest advisers was concerned this was such a big problem that it might be better not to run at all.
