NY Times: Hillary Clinton's new book is a flop

Hillary Clinton’s latest book, Stronger Together, is a flop according to sales figures collected by Nielsen bookscan. The NY Times reports on the disappointing first week sales:

Hillary Clinton’s newest book, “Stronger Together,” which provides a policy blueprint for where she hopes to take the country if she is elected president, sold just 2,912 copies in its first week on sale, according to Nielsen BookScan.

Both Mrs. Clinton and her running mate, Senator Tim Kaine, have promoted the book on the campaign trail, but the sales figure, which tallies about 80 percent of booksellers nationwide and does not include e-books, firmly makes the book what the publishing industry would consider a flop.

First-week sales typically account for around a third of the total sold, thanks to the publicity blitzes that accompany publishers’ biggest releases. By comparison, Mrs. Clinton’s 2014 memoir, “Hard Choices,” which also fell short of expectations, sold more than 85,000 copies in its first week.

Reviews of the book on Amazon are somewhat predictably split between those who praise it as a five star “amazing book by an amazing woman” and others who label it one-star “propaganda.” One reviewer who claims he actually read it said this:

Is it a good book?

Stronger Together is pretty much a straight policy platform. As such, while it informs it does not entertain. That’s not meant as a harsh criticism…frankly I’ve had more than my fill of entertainment in this campaign. But for those wondering how this reads, check out the issues section of the Clinton website first – it’s pretty much an expanded version of that.

Again, that’s from a supporter who gave it four stars. Here’s a sample of the book’s compelling content, from the first chapter:

The super-rich are skipping out on paying their fair share of taxes, and too many companies are shipping jobs overseas to boost profits in the next quarter rather than investing in their workers so they stay profitable for the next decade. And our policies have not kept up with the big changes in the way American families live, learn and work. We’re asking families to rely on an old system of support in a new economic reality.

We can and we will fix these problems. No country is better positioned to thrive in today’s global economy…

And on it goes like that for another hundred plus pages of progressive pablum. The bottom line is this: Hillary Clinton’s camp has cobbled together a book length set of policy proposals that are of interest to almost no one.
