FBI investigating hack of NY Times

Once again, Russia is suspected to be behind a hack connected to U.S. politics. The time the target wasn’t a Democratic party organization like the DNC but…well, on second thought, it was the NY Times. CNN reports:

The intrusions, detected in recent months, are under investigation by the FBI and other US security agencies. Investigators so far believe that Russian intelligence is likely behind the attacks and that Russian hackers are targeting news organizations as part of a broader series of hacks that also have focused on Democratic Party organizations, the officials said.

The FBI declined to comment and a spokesperson for The New York Times would not confirm the attacks or the investigation.

To be fair, the NY Times has done some good work this election cycle including the first story about Clinton’s exclusive use of a private email server. On the other hand, they’ve also published some truly stupid editorials like the one blaming the Orlando terror attack on a climate of hate created by Republican politicians. It would certainly be interesting to see the back-channel discussions on that one.

So will this latest round of hacked material end up at WikiLeaks? Can the group publish the private correspondence of NY Times staff without becoming persona non grata to news organizations everywhere? Or will Russia need to find some other front to leak the material?

We keep hearing that Russia has hacked the entire Democratic-media complex and the FBI seems to have confirmed that’s true, but the significance of the actual leaks probably peaked with the DNC emails about questioning Bernie Sanders’ religion. If there is anything else of significance in the material Russia has hacked, they seem to be waiting for October to reveal the surprise.
