The Gaslighting Over Kamala as Border Czar Has Begun

Most reporters in the legacy media barely had time to finish reading Joe Biden's letter announcing that he was dropping out of the presidential race and his subsequent endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris to be his replacement before the race was on to depict Harris as the Second Coming of the Savior and the nation's only hope of being saved from the monster that is Donald Trump. By this point, nobody should be acting surprised. The press needed to put the unpleasantness of their brief efforts to throw Biden under the bus behind them and get back to work supporting the Democrats as quickly as possible. One of the biggest challenges that they faced immediately came in the form of some Republicans who were quick to point out that the Veep had been tasked with securing the southern border, a job that she not only failed at spectacularly but didn't even appear to have made any effort on whatsoever. Most of the mainstream media is having none of it. They insist that it was never Harris' job to do that, so stop pointing fingers, you rascals. One of the best examples of this phenomenon showed up yesterday at Mother Jones. They claim that not only was Kamala never the "border czar," but even if she were, the job was virtually impossible to deal with anyway.

Even before President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the race on Sunday afternoon, Republicans already had a line of attack prepared against the likely Democratic nominee Kamala Harris: “Border czar.”

As vice president, Harris was tasked with attacking the “root causes” of migration from Central America to the United States. Those drivers are not only complex, but long-standing—and deeply tied to America’s Cold War politics and imperialism. Harris had the (potentially impossible) job of trying to understand, and fix, over half a century of US meddling in the region—in addition to country-specific dynamics of that meddling—that has boomeranged into a migrant crisis.

Harris was never appointed the “czar” of “the border.” Nor is she in charge of it. That is to a large extent the purview of the secretary of homeland security, which of course Republicans know all too well.

You can see how the left is trying to structure their defense of Harris on this issue. She was "never appointed the czar of the border." She was tasked with addressing the root causes of migration, a job that was "potentially impossible." So let's not be trying to blame her for this crisis. Instead, you should be blaming Alejandro Mayorkas. (Apparently, he is next in line for a spot under the bus.)

Unfortunately for Mother Jones and the rest of the liberal media, the internet has a long memory and they can't thwart the Wayback Machine. Let's take a quick walk down memory lane and see what Joe Biden actually did back in 2021. Here's the Associated Press from March 24 of that year. (Emphasis added)

President Joe Biden has tapped Vice President Kamala Harris to lead the White House effort to tackle the migration challenge at the U.S. southern border and work with Central American nations to address root causes of the problem...

In delegating the matter to Harris, Biden is seeking to replicate a dynamic that played out when he served as President Barack Obama’s vice president.

So yes, Joe Biden did include a goal to address the root causes of migration. But that was in addition to tackling the challenge at the border. He specifically delegated the matter to Harris. And Alejandro Mayorkas, who the AP now wishes to blame, was standing right at their side for the announcement.

And here's NBC News from the same date.

President Joe Biden announced Wednesday that he has appointed Vice President Kamala Harris to lead efforts to stem migration across the U.S.-Mexico border, as the administration faces growing political pressure to address a surge in undocumented migrant children unaccompanied by parents.

Biden said during an immigration meeting at the White House that he had asked Harris to lead the administration's efforts with Mexico and the Northern Triangle.

NBC News only brings up the Northern Triangle and the "root causes" as an afterthought. The headline of the story deals with Harris being given the assignment to stem migration across the U.S.-Mexico border. So please spare use the platitudes and the wringing of hands. Kamala Harris took the job and she failed at is spectacularly.

Other outlets are attempting to make hay out of the fact that Joe Biden didn't specifically refer to Harris as "the border czar." That's equally nonsensical. It's not an official title, but rather a common description used by the press for an official who is given a specific issue to handle as part of their portfolio. We've had "czars" in the American government for all of the modern era. In 2022, the New York Times referred to Rahul Gupta as Biden's Drug Czar because he was supposed to deal with the flood of fentanyl coming over the border and all of the overdoses that were being seen. (That worked out swimmingly also, didn't it?) You may rest assured that his business cards didn't have the word "czar" on them. Harry Jacob Anslinger was recorded as the nation's first drug czar under Herbert Hoover. Bill Clinton had four different AIDS czars. The list goes on.

None of this will stop the legacy media from trying to whitewash Kamala Harris' record of failure on the border. And nothing will change the fact that she was assigned that task by Joe Biden as part of her portfolio and she failed miserably. Aside from one vacation to the Northern Triangle where said said, "Don't come," she didn't even try. Go peddle your partisan dreams elsewhere or stop calling yourselves reporters.
