Baltimore's Marilyn Mosby Wants a Presidential Pardon. Seriously?

Looking around at the state of the nation these days, it might be easy to conclude that the Biden presidency hasn't been working out very well for almost anyone. But it could wind up being very beneficial to former Baltimore State's Attorney and convicted perjurer and fraudster Marilyn Mosby. She showed up on Joy Reid's MSNBC show last night and put forward a public plea to Biden to issue her a pardon ahead of her May 23 sentencing date. She insisted that she has done "absolutely nothing wrong" and is the victim of plots concocted by her conservative critics. Two juries saw the matter differently. So will Joe Biden bite on this dangling bit of bait? Would his handlers really want to see him be dragged into this local mud fight? (Baltimore Sun)

Former Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby wants President Joe Biden to intervene ahead of her federal sentencing on perjury and mortgage fraud charges.

In an interview Wednesday night on “The ReidOut,” Joy Reid’s MSNBC weeknight show, Mosby said she has done “absolutely nothing wrong, nothing illegal, nothing criminal” — and said she thinks it would be appropriate for Biden to pardon her.

“I’m confident that this administration will see past the political attacks,” said Mosby, attributing her legal woes to attacks by conservative adversaries.

At first glance, you might be tempted to think that Joe Biden might look favorably on this request. After all, he and Mosby have quite a bit in common. Before her downfall, Mosby went after the Baltimore police with great vigor and tried to have a number of them locked up, though those efforts eventually failed. She also found ways to have significant amounts of money mysteriously show up in her bank accounts, though nowhere near the volume of cash that Biden Inc. managed to rake in from around the globe.

Biden's team might also see some political advantages in riding to Mosby's rescue. After all, she is a Black female who was arrested and put on trial. She is almost a perfect DEI poster child. The President could bring her to the White House for a pardoning ceremony and tell his supporters that he is standing up for oppressed minorities or something along those lines.

On the flip side of the coin, however, Biden and his team would need to identify what might be in such a deal for the Big Guy. What does Mosby have to offer in return for such a gift? At one time, Marilyn Mosby was seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party and had been mentioned as a possible candidate for a prominent role in the DNC. That almost certainly would have grabbed Biden's attention. But now her political career is completely finished. She was investigated for various acts of corruption, arrested, put on trial (twice) and convicted (twice). There are some levels of public failure that even the DNC can't tolerate. So she really has nothing of value to offer Biden in the future.

Mosby is facing up to 40 years in prison when she is sentenced, though nobody believes she'll face anywhere near the maximum stretch behind bars. But it seems a near certainty that she will spend at least some time locked up. If so, she will be in good company in terms of Baltimore politics. She will join several mayors and multiple City Council members who have been convicted of corruption and wound up staying at the Crowbar Motel. It just seems to be a tradition in Charm City. Yet the people of Baltimore keep electing the same pack of Democrats from the same families back to office year after year. Perhaps Joe Biden should consider investing in a vacation home there.
