Latino Dem Senators Fighting Border Deal

During the holiday recess, it was starting to sound as if Joe Biden was getting ready to cut a deal with the House GOP in which he would make “meaningful changes” to border security protocols. It’s not that he wants to do it, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that the House is not going to approve the next shipment of weapons and pallets of cash to Zelensky unless he gives something significant in return. This has upset some of the Senate Democrats, particularly Latino members. Some of them are now participating in what’s being described as “open opposition” to the idea unless it includes provisions to provide for more (not less) immigration and citizenship opportunities. Prominent Latinos in Congress looked on quietly, at first, privately raising concerns with the Biden administration over the direction of border security talks.

Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla of California was on the phone constantly with administration officials questioning why the Senate negotiations did not include any meaningful consideration of providing pathways to citizenship for longtime undocumented immigrants.

New Mexico Democrat Sen. Ben Ray Luján made similar arguments as he tried to get meetings with top-level White House officials.

Talk about not reading the room correctly. I’m sure that Senators like Padilla originally ran on a promise to work on expedited immigration and citizenship for the Dreamers, but the current situation has shifted the political grounds on this issue significantly. More and more Democrats, particularly big, blue city mayors and blue state governors have been howling for Biden to do something about the armies of illegal migrants overruning them. Recent polling has shown immigration rising toward the top of the list of concerns among voters, including growing numbers of independents and even Democrats. Panic is beginning to set in.

Padilla and Luján are trying to force a plan to increase immigration quotas and grant citizenship to the so-called “Dreamers.” But that’s not the problem facing the country at the moment. The problem is the literal millions of illegal migrants from countries all around the world who have been allowed to cross our border and been turned loose to go God-only-knows-where. And the flow isn’t slowing down, to say nothing of reversing.

It’s amazing to me how anyone in Congress regardless of their party affiliation can’t see this with their own eyes. This shouldn’t just be a question of Joe Biden’s approval ratings or what the polls are showing. This is a legitimate crisis and it was caused entirely by Biden’s policies when he reversed the Trump-era rules immediately upon taking office. And it’s not just the raw number of migrants either. It’s the fentanyl, the child trafficking, and the looming threat that any of those unknown migrants wandering around could be preparing to answer the next call to jihad.

If any of Joe Biden’s handlers can bring themselves to have Joe cut a meaningful deal with the House GOP on closing the border, he might just have one positive thing he could point to in his reelection bid. Other than that, he has been and remains a complete disaster for people in this country. And despite the legacy media doing their very best to ignore these problems and cover for him, people are noticing. We can’t simply wait for 2025 to start fixing this disaster. We need to be starting today.
