A couple of weeks ago, we discussed the bizarre case of Dexter Wade, a Mississippi man who was reportedly killed when a police cruiser accidentally ran him down as he was attempting to cross a highway in the dark. The police claimed that Wade had no ID on him and they couldn’t locate the family (who had been looking for him and calling the missing persons hotline) for months. Despite having a prescription bottle with his name on it, they said they finally gave up and buried him in an unmarked grave in a pauper’s cemetery. Not only was Wade buried without his family being informed, but once his identity was made public, they exhumed him without notifying the family either. And according to the most recent report, it turns out that Wade did have his state ID on him when he was buried. Needless to say, the family has a lot of questions and believes this is sounding more and more like a coverup. (NY Post)

“The fact that Dexter had a state identification card and several other identifying items shows us that there was a concerted effort to keep the truth and manner of his death from his family,” Crump said.

“There is no excuse, not even incompetence, for not notifying a next of kin of an identified man’s death.”

You can go back to our original report I linked at the top to see all of the questions I raised when this story first came out. I conceded that it might be possible that this was some sort of gross administrative error, but the amount of incompetence and negligence required would have been staggering. But the new details about the exhumed body strongly suggest that the police have been lying. Dexter Wade was buried with both his ID card and his proof of health insurance in his pocket. How could a search of the body fail to note that?

Even worse, the address listed on his ID was the same as his mother’s address. We were previously told that the police had been unable to come up with an address for either Wade or his next of kin. His mother was left wondering where her son was for months until he had already been buried. She had called the police repeatedly seeking information without getting any answers. All the while, he was in a pauper’s graveyard under a marker with the number 672 attached to it.

We still don’t know what really happened, but it’s not a stretch of the imagination to believe that Dexter Wade’s death was no accident and he had become a problem that the cops needed to go away. If it was truly just a case of accidental vehicular homicide, the police officers involved wouldn’t have faced any serious charges. Why not just admit what happened and contact the family? They almost certainly lied about the lack of identification. But at the same time, if that was their plan, why would they bury him with his ID in his pocket? Wouldn’t they have thought to remove and destroy it?

Also, when they exhumed the body, why wasn’t the mother notified? None of this makes sense. We also learned that Wade’s body wasn’t given the normal preservation treatments, so it was very badly decayed when he was exhumed. That sounds like the original burial was a rushed job. If this turns out to be what it sounds like, a lot of people in both the police department and the coroner’s office would have to have been involved in a conspiracy to cover this up.
