The enemies of Israel are numerous and they are definitely active on social media. That’s a lesson that was quickly taught to “socialite” Kylie Jenner this weekend. Following the invasion by Hamas, Jenner went on her Instagram account (where she has more than 400 million followers apparently) and shared a photo from the pro-Israel account “Stand With Us” displaying a flag that reads “Now and always, we stand with the people of Israel.” The backlash was immediate, with many of her followers tearing her down for not supporting the Palestinians. Within the hour, Jenner deleted the post and apologized. While I have never had any interest in keeping up with the Kardashians, my momentary admiration for Jenner being willing to take a righteous stand on an important issue immediately evaporated. Kylie Jenner has come under fire for posting and then deleting a photo on Instagram showing her support for Israel following a Hamas attack that killed hundreds.

Jenner, 26, shared the photo from the pro-Israel account @StandWithUs, which features the Israeli flag and reads, “Now and always, we stand with the people of Israel!”

The youngest Jenner deleted the Instagram Story post within an hour, following backlash from some of her 400 million Instagram followers.

I will confess that all of this is unfolding in a world where I simply don’t travel. The only Jenner I’m somewhat familiar with is Caitlyn, formerly Bruce, and even then it’s only for the political and social interactions. I actually had to go Google Kylie this morning to even know how to identify her as a “socialite.” (She doesn’t appear to have ever had a job outside of appearing on television series and being associated with the Kardashians.)

But this does give us a peek inside the world of these pop culture socialites and their hordes of fans. The preaching coming from Jenner’s followers shows how completely uninformed they are about the real world and the situation in the Middle East. Someone apparently told them at some point that the Palestinians were some sort of “oppressed people” and the evil government of Israel was abusing them. Either that or they’re simply just a bunch of antisemites, which I suppose is equally possible. (The two don’t have to be mutually exclusive.)

“Don’t get involved in politics and say that u support i**ael. P@lestine has been suffering for ages,” slammed one person on the socialite’s most recent post.

“Are u even human if u are with zionists,” wondered a second person.

Palestinian flags adorned Jenner’s Instagram feed for much of the day. At least some of the respondents appear to be seriously antisemitic rather than simply ignorant, however. Anyone with the vocabulary to toss around the word “Zionists” surely must have at least some understanding of the situation in that part of the world. The outrage spread to other platforms as well, including people who tried to take her to task on Twitter. Those included one woman (sorry for gendering you) who actually includes the word “whore” in her handle.

This episode was a likely useless trip down the rabbit hole of the Hollywood “in crowd.” But I don’t see it as a total waste of time because we should always listen to people when they tell us who they are. And if nothing else, for a brief moment, Kylie Jenner made the effort to do and say something positive before later retreating. The flag photo she shared was so nice that I though we should preserve it here. Enjoy.
