I don’t know what they’re putting in Joe Biden’s Wheaties this week, but he seemed to have a bit more pep in his step than usual during a trip to Manhattan last night. He even managed to make it through some (obviously prepared) comments on stage without too much trouble. The event was a fundraiser for him, of course, with tickets at the theater ranging from $250 to $7,500, and plenty of Broadway stars turned out to support him. So what was Uncle Joe’s pitch to get people to support his flailing reelection bid? Since he has virtually nothing to point to in his own record, he fell back on his favorite golden oldie. He told the audience that Donald Trump is still lurking out there and he is “determined to destroy the nation.” That’s rather rich, coming from the guy who is currently in the process of doing just that. President Joe Biden on Monday told a packed Broadway theater full of big-name stars hosting a fundraiser in his honor that he was running for reelection because Donald Trump was determined to destroy the nation.

Democracy is at stake, he told the audience at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater. Hate groups have been emboldened, he said. Books are being banned. Children go to school fearing shootings.

“Let there be no question, Donald Trump and his MAGA Republicans are determined to destroy American democracy,” he said, referring to the former president’s slogan, “Make America Great Again.” “And I will always defend, protect and fight for our democracy.”

The rest of the speakers delivered the expected pablum, with the glitterati promising to be “warriors for Biden” to ensure the future of democracy or whatever. But the seats were full and the money flowed into Biden’s coffers, so I suppose everything went off largely as was planned without any significant gaffes or pratfalls being reported.

But what is that “democracy” that Joe Biden keeps promising to “fight for” and what does it look like? Does he mean the democracy where a leader’s political opponents are pursued by the so-called Justice Department and even threatened with prison time? Is it the democracy where family members of the most powerful in the preferred political class can thwart our system of justice and receive favorable treatment where others would find their doors being kicked in by armed FBI agents while their children were eating breakfast? Does he mean that democracy?

Any talk about “destroying America” is even more hilarious. These claims were being made on a Broadway stage to great fanfare by the guy who brought us the Biden border crisis. He’s the same guy who drove gas prices back up (again) because the Biden energy crisis imploded the country’s energy independence after Trump left office. He is the author of Bidenflation, which has been slowly destroying the middle class under the guise of “Bidenomics.” (‘It’s working!’)

We keep hearing rumors that prominent Democrats are close to pulling the trigger and calling for Biden to step aside, but it’s still not happening. And they are running out of time. If they don’t begin preparing for a legitimate 2024 Democratic primary soon, they won’t be able to pull it off. And if they can’t, the only remaining options will be to use the Superdelegates at the Democratic Convention to put someone else on the ticket and retire Biden (and probably Kamala) by force or leave Joe to face off once again against Donald Trump, absent some major change in the GOP field.

Don’t let all of the smiling faces and fanfare on Broadway fool you. There are some influential Democrats out there who are sweating bullets right now. And for good reason.
