Are Tucker Carlson and Elon Musk cooking something up?

It’s been a few weeks since Fox News fired Tucker Carlson (ahem… I meant to say “reasonably agreed to part ways”) and many of us thought we would have some idea of where his new show would land by now. But for the most part, we’ve gotten nothing but radio silence. Aside from one short Twitter video on April 26, there haven’t even been any updates on his website that I’ve noticed. Speculation and rumors have been making the rounds, however. One of the latest comes from Axios, where they claim that Tucker has had at least one meeting with Elon Musk to discuss the possibility of working together. But at the same time, Tucker is in a legal battle with Fox News which has been fairly polite so far, but the days of playing nice may be running quite short. (Business Insider)

Tucker Carlson has had at least one conversation with Elon Musk about working together, according to a new report from Axios.

However, the former Fox News commentator and billionaire Twitter and Tesla CEO reportedly did not discuss the specifics of what such an arrangement could look like, per Axios…

Carlson and recently-fired CNN anchor Don Lemon have both retained the same lawyer, Bryan Freedman, to settle disputes with their former employers.

Tucker Carlson obviously wants to get back into the game. But his contract with Fox News doesn’t allow him to work for any competing networks or even for himself. Fox’s ratings are already cratering and they’re losing subscribers to Fox Nation in droves, so they would rather pay him $20 million per year to stay home and do nothing than have him pop up somewhere else at 8 pm every night.

As I said, that situation probably won’t hold for long. They’ve managed to remain civil in public up until now, but Axios is further reporting that Tucker has been talking to some of his very high-profile friends who may start publicly trashing the network if a deal isn’t reached. Does Fox really expect Tucker Carlson (of all people) to just sit down and shut up until 2025?

Getting back to the portion of the report dealing with Elon Musk, it’s not immediately clear what such a deal would look like. Musk doesn’t own a television network, though he could probably buy one if push came to shove. But Musk already owns Twitter and the current version of the platform allows users to broadcast videos from inside of a tweet. If Tucker prerecorded his shows as he’s generally done and just put them up in a tweet at 8 pm every night, imagine the possibilities. It would probably drive a lot more users to Twitter, which would be great for Musk’s bottom line and I’m sure Tucker would be able to work out a deal where he was paid handsomely in return.

Alternately, Tucker could go to another platform entirely. Newsmax supposedly already offered him more than the $20 million he gets from Fox, assuming he can get out of his contract. Either way, it seems impossible that Fox will be able to keep Carlson locked up in the dark. And when he comes back, he’s going to bring his audience with him wherever he lands. It certainly feels like he’s up to something. Go back and watch that Twitter video I linked above again. Maybe it’s just me, but he seemed to have a devilish glint in his eye at the end when he smiled and said, “See you soon.”
