NYC Mayor picks a fight with MTG

One curious confrontation arose in New York City leading up to Donald Trump’s arrival to be charged by Alvin Bragg’s office. Perhaps “confrontation” isn’t the best word since it happened at a distance. But the conflict arose between New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. Greene is one of Trump’s biggest supporters and she’s been leading protests against the former President’s treatment in the Big Apple. When Adams delivered remarks on Trump’s imminent arrival, the Mayor called out Greene by name. He accused her of “spreading misinformation” and cautioned her to “be on your best behavior.” (USA Today)

As Donald Trump is set to make history Tuesday in New York as the first former president indicted and arraigned, the city’s Mayor Eric Adams has a message for one of the Republican’s most loyal supporters.

“People like Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is known to spread misinformation and hate speech, while you’re in town, be on your best behavior,” Adams said during a press conference Monday.

Greene, a Republican congresswoman from Georgia, and other Trump allies were outnumbered by media, anti-Trump protesters and other onlookers during a “Rally for Trump” Tuesday morning.

Unless he was just looking to score some easy headlines, it’s unclear why Mayor Adams thought it might be a good idea to call out Greene. She isn’t exactly known for taking such things lightly, to say the least. He should have known that she would most likely come back at him with both rhetorical barrels firing.

We didn’t have to wait long to see that self-fulfilling prophecy come true. Greene was quickly up on social media, calling the Mayor “delusional” and accusing him of wanting to suppress people’s First Amendment rights.

She also reminded the Mayor that the streets are filled with homeless drug addicts on his watch. The city isn’t safe, and it’s not because she showed up there.

Greene did take part in a rally supporting Trump, but the turnout was fairly low and she was drowned out by critics. Of course, this is New York City we’re talking about. You can only round up so many conservatives, particularly in the middle of a workday. (The liberals always seem to have unlimited free time to protest. It’s just so strange…)

New York City is still bleeding away its population, so you might think that the Mayor would be encouraging people to come. Instead, he appears to be willing to try to discourage people from showing up. This is similar to when NY Governor Kathy Hochul said that all of the Republicans in the state should leave. It sounds like more and more of them are taking her up on her offer. But picking a fight with Marjorie Taylor Greene is probably not the best strategy either of them could choose.
