This is one issue that doesn’t seem to be directly on the ballot almost anywhere in the country and you only hear a relative handful of candidates talking about it. The subject is the growing trend of doctors providing so-called “gender therapy” for children who have become convinced that they have gender dysphoria, believing that they are somehow the opposite gender of their bodies. Why we’re not seeing more candidates campaigning on this issue is something of a mystery, particularly when you look at the results of yet another poll that came out this week. A recent survey by The Trafalgar Group found that an overwhelming majority of likely voters were opposed to sex-chang surgery or the prescribing of puberty-blocking drugs for minors and would be unlikely to vote for a candidate who supports such procedures. Those opinions were found to spread across party lines, among Democrats, independents, and, of course, Republicans. And the numbers weren’t even close. (Daily Wire)

A new poll found that more than 70% of American voters in the 2022 midterm elections are not likely to vote for a candidate who supports allowing minors to undergo gender transition procedures.

According to the survey, nearly 80% of independent voters and 43% of Democrats join Republicans in opposing candidates who support allowing minors to medically transition.

“As with so many other election 2022 issues, the far left has gone too far in pushing unrestricted Transgender procedures for any child at nearly any age without any restrictions,” Mark Meckler, President of the Convention of States, said in a press release.

Seventy percent is a huge number when it comes to any divisive topic in American politics these days. And the even larger 80% of independent voters should send up a warning flag for any candidate who comes down on the wrong side of the issue because independents wind up deciding nearly all close elections.

The fact that this survey was restricted to likely voters rather than simply registered voters makes it a topic that really should have been front and center during the midterm campaign. And yet shockingly few candidates, even among the Republican ranks, were calling out their opponents to pin them down on the issue. It’s a delicate line for the Democrats to walk because opposing these barbaric, irreversible treatments for children would put them at odds with their small but very vocal far-left base who champion these abusive procedures.

It’s not that nobody is doing anything about this. Florida’s state medical boards just banned transgender surgery and puberty blockers for minors this week.

The Florida Board of Medicine and state Board of Osteopathic Medicine voted Friday to ban puberty blockers and sex-reassignment surgery as treatments for transgender minors in the state.

The board of medicine voted 6-3, with five others not present, on Friday to forbid doctors from prescribing puberty blockers and hormones or performing surgeries until a patient is 18. Exceptions will be made for children who are already receiving the treatment.

The Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine also voted to ban the use of puberty blockers and sex-reassignment surgery in new patients who are minors but allowed an exception for children enrolled in clinical studies.

This change only applies to the state of Florida, but it really needs to be a national issue. I’m normally in favor of allowing states to decide such matters for themselves, but isn’t the mutilation of children something that we should be able to tackle on a federal level? The numbers from this poll, along with a previous survey showing that strong majorities view these procedures as child abuse, suggest that the issue could be tackled as a federal matter.

But even if the will doesn’t exist to make that happen, clearly such bans could be put in place in almost any state in the nation. This is not a closely contested issue dividing right from left, red from blue, or Republicans from Democrats. This should be common sense, and for a vast swath of the voters in this country, it clearly is. Allowing children who are too young to consent to getting a tattoo to sign up for irreversible genital mutilation surgery is not “medical care.” It’s insanity, and it needs to be called out as such. And if the only way to make this happen is at the ballot box, then so be it. It should have started long before now.
