Black History Month seemed to go fairly well in February, with plenty of educational events being sponsored and various television specials being dedicated to the topic. But now February has drawn to a close and we’re moving on to Women’s History Month. Well… most of us are, anyway. That apparently doesn’t apply to the folks at Northwest Missouri State University. They recently sent out a (now deleted) tweet announcing their planned schedule of events for “Womynx History Month.” The hilarious backlash to this new, absurd mutation of the English language was immediate and richly deserved. But hey… they were just trying to “promote inclusivity.” (Fox News)

A Missouri university is facing backlash on social media by referring to Women’s History Month, which began on March 1st, as “Womynx History Month.”

“To commemorate Womynx History Month, Northwest will host a variety of activities throughout the month of March,” Northwest Missouri State University posted on Twitter Tuesday. “The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Providing Healing, Promoting Hope.’”

The Twitter post linked to a website explaining that the school is using the term “Womynx” to “encourage inclusivity.”

A follow-up explanation was offered by a member of the (and I swear I’m not making this up) “Northwest’s Womynx History Month Committee.” Dr. Giselle Greenidge spoke of the need to recognize the many achievements of influential women that usually go unnoticed.

This looks like an idea that’s ahead of its time. Probably very, very, very far ahead of its time. It’s reminiscent of the preposterous progressive effort to do away with both Latio and Latina in favor of “Latinx.” We saw a large number of white progressive activists using the term over the past couple of years, perhaps thinking that they were doing something helpful. But most polls show that fewer than 5% of actual Hispanic Americans use the term.

In this case, the progressives at this university are clearly trying to show that they’re including “trans women” in the general category of “women” when celebrating women’s achievements. I wonder if they’ll be celebrating the experiences of all of the actual female collegiate swimmers who were blocked from advancement in their sport by Lia Thomas? Oh, wait. We’re probably not supposed to bring up inconvenient questions like that during Womynx History Month. What was I thinking?

I suppose we should get with the program and prepare for the future, eh? May is Jewish American Heritage Month. Anyone have any suggestions? Perhaps it will need to be something like Jewix North Americanx Heritage Month. And November is somehow still listed as being National American Indian Heritage Month. I thought we weren’t supposed to say “Indian” in that context anymore. I’ll leave you to come up with a new name for that one.
