Los Angeles resident Maribel Duarte received an unpleasant surprise last week when her son returned home from school. He had in his possession a new CDC vaccination card, showing that he had received his first COVID vaccine that day at the school. The problem is that Duarte never signed a permission slip for her son to be vaccinated and was not consulted in advance. The boy said he agreed to get the shot after the school offered him pizza as a reward for rolling up his sleeve. Making matters worse was the fact that the woman who administered the vaccine told the boy not to say anything to his parents about it because she “didn’t want to get in trouble.” Needless to say, Ms. Duarte is not pleased. Maribel Duarte says her 13-year-old son, a student at the Barack Obama Global Prep Academy in South LA, brought home a vaccine card after having accepted the COVID-19 vaccine at school.

She says he said yes when someone offered it in exchange for pizza.

“The lady that gave him the shot and signed the paper told my son, ‘Please don’t say anything. I don’t want to get in trouble.'”

There are quite a few things wrong with what’s going on in the Los Angeles Unified School District at the moment, specifically when it comes to the district’s mandatory vaccination policy. There are already two lawsuits over the mandate making their way through the courts, but no formal ruling has been issued yet.

First of all, under current California law, children are not legally allowed to give informed consent for medical procedures. All medical procedures must be approved by a parent or guardian. I get the impression that the LAUSD is well aware of that, otherwise, they wouldn’t be trying to bribe the children into agreeing to take the shot and asking them to withhold that information from their parents. And since when is it ever okay to tell children to keep secrets from their parents? That’s the sort of behavior one would typically expect to see from a pedophile.

Further, as noted in one of the two lawsuits I mentioned, school districts in California do not have the power to alter the list of mandatory vaccines. Those decisions are made by the state health department and then must be approved by the state legislature. Neither of those steps has happened, so what the LAUSD is currently doing appears to be illegal.

Then there’s the matter of Maribel Duarte’s son specifically. Duarte isn’t any sort of anti-vaxxer. She’s actually vaccinated herself. But her son has asthma and other allergy problems. She’s concerned about reports of respiratory issues arising as a side effect of the vaccines. If her son was going to be vaccinated, it should have been done by their own doctor at a medical facility where the proper resources would be at the ready in the event that the boy suffered severe side-effects from the shot. This behavior by the school is simply reckless and dangerous.

Meanwhile, 34,000 LAUSD students have missed the first deadline to be vaccinated. That means that roughly 20% of the students remain unvaccinated. The District is currently giving all students age 12 and above until January 12 to comply. They say that any of them who fail to do so will be sent back to remote learning from home. This is essentially blackmail against the parents, particularly the ones having trouble arranging for daycare when their children are not in the classroom. And it’s all based on a mandate that is forbidden under state law. Something has to give soon before this situation comes to a head.
