Another Texas educational lesson on why you don't try to rob a gun store

Earlier today we learned about one murderous thug who almost got away with robbing a gun shop of 14 handguns. He was apprehended almost immediately, though later released to go on to kill someone. But most times when someone attempts to rob a gun store, things go far worse for the would-be thief. Yet another of these cases showed up in Richardson, Texas recently. Four aspiring criminals walked into Mike’s Gun Room with at least two of them holding handguns, looking to relieve the joint of some cash and inventory. Sadly for them, Mike was on the premises and found a way to convey his displeasure with their activities. (CBS Dallas, Ft. Worth)

A man who was allegedly trying to rob a Richardson gun shop was shot during the attempt.

It happened at Mike’s Gun Room on Belt Line Road near Glenville Road around 3:00 p.m. Thursday.

Richardson Police said four men walked into the store and two of them were holding handguns.

The store owner was able to grab a gun and shot one of the suspects.

The owner’s name is Mike Brown and he’s 77 years young. The Dallas Morning News has additional details and a brief interview with Mike.

The four robbers apparently got the drop on Brown originally but he feigned having a heart problem and claimed he needed to get his medication from under the counter. But instead of a bottle of pills he came back up with a handgun and shot one of the thieves. While that criminal was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, his three accomplices suddenly lost interest in the project and fled.

The story doesn’t have an entirely happy ending, however. The men had already grabbed a significant number of firearms before Mike was able to pull off his self-defense maneuver. They wound up getting away with 53 handguns that they had already loaded into their silver or gray Chevrolet Impala.

When asked about the outcome, Mike Brown said that he felt bad that he had to shoot somebody, but it was “better than Plan B.”

This just seems like something that should be pretty obvious. People who own or operate gun shops don’t tend to be shrinking violets who recoil at the thought of firing a weapon. In fact, the vast majority of them are already gun owners themselves and they are probably armed while at work if state laws allow them to do so. If you try to take them down, there’s a very good chance that you’re going to come out on the losing end of a firefight. And yet people seem to try it on a weekly basis somewhere around the country.

The authorities are still looking for the other three men. If you happen to be in that area and see or know anything about this crime, please do let the police know about it. The ATF is offering a sizable reward for relevant information.
