Tom Steyer to launch POTUS bid. Or not

If there’s one thing most political observers in the United States seem to be able to agree on, it’s that we just don’t have enough Democrats running for President. I mean, how is anyone supposed to be satisfied with the final selection if they’ve only got a little over two dozen choices? Where’s the diversity?

Never fear. One hero has heard your cries from the wilderness and is ready to help. Reasoning that what the Democrats are really dealing with is a lack of elderly, white male billionaires, Tom Steyer has told aides to prepare for a POTUS bid announcement tomorrow. Of course, by the time you read this, he may have changed his mind again. (The Atlantic)

The presidential campaign announcements may not be over yet—with the latest potentially coming from a person who’d ruled out a run just a few months ago.

Billionaire investor Tom Steyer, who in the last decade has been both the top Democratic donor in the country and the prime engine for pushing for the impeachment of President Donald Trump, appears ready to become Democratic candidate number 26. Last week in San Francisco, Steyer told staffers at two progressive organizations he funds, Need to Impeach and NextGen America, that he is launching a 2020 campaign, and that he plans to make the formal announcement this Tuesday.

So there you have it. Tomorrow we’ll have yet another big name in the Democratic field and the lower tier candidates will all need to scramble to make sure Steyer doesn’t drive them off the debate stage later this month. Right?

Well… maybe. But we should keep in mind that Steyer made the same “announcement of a coming big announcement” back in January, only to turn around and go to Iowa to announce that he wasn’t running. Is he playing the same game again here?

What exactly would Steyer bring to the race that Democrats don’t already have? It’s difficult to imagine him wheeling out any seriously unique liberal policies that haven’t already been pitched by one of the others. And as I mentioned above, he comes in as a tie for last place in the diversity follies. (Along with Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, and a few others.)

Oh, wait. I’ve got it. It’s the money. Steyer’s claim could be that it takes an elderly white billionaire to beat an elderly white billionaire. Also, much like Trump, he could promise to fund most of his campaign himself and not rely on an army of donors. Oh, who are we kidding? Steyer is a one-trick pony who talks about impeaching Trump these days and not much else. And you can’t really run for president on a platform of impeaching the president you’re trying to replace. (Unless, of course, you’re Joe Biden promising that your first action as President will be to defeat Trump.)

I get the impression that Tom Steyer’s personal view of how much the nation is crying out for his leadership might be a tad bit unrealistic. But we’ll find out tomorrow. Or not.
