So much for getting over the 2016 election and “moving on” I suppose. A recent poll completed by Scott Rasmussen has found that a perhaps surprising number of Democrats really have bought into their own press about the President. A solid majority of them (57%) say that they believe Donald Trump is guilty of treason. We’re not talking about obstruction or even collusion. The T word has been invoked. “Treason” against the United States of America.

Fifty-seven percent (57%) of Democrats believe that, in his relations with the Russian government, President Trump is guilty of treason. A ScottRasmussen.com national survey found that just 14% of those in Nancy Pelosi’s party disagree while 29% are not sure.

Republicans reject the notion that the president is guilty of treason by an 82% to 7% margin. Among Independent voters, 30% believe he has committed treason while 44% disagree and 25% are not sure (see full crosstab results).

It would appear that only 7% of registered Republicans – I’m assuming it’s the Never Trump dead-enders – are willing to go that far. But the fact that nearly a third of independents are willing to bust out the “treason” idea shows how effective the media’s War on Trump has been in some quarters.

Let’s pause for a moment here, take a deep breath and recall precisely what charge is being tossed around. The basic definition of treason covers, “participating in a war against one’s native country, attempting to overthrow its government, spying on its military, its diplomats, or its secret services for a hostile and foreign power, or attempting to kill its head of state.”

Any of that sound like it fits in with what’s been going on in Washington for the past couple of years? Most of it’s probably not even possible (or at least practical) when you’re the head of state of the country in question. Though I suppose Trump could technically be accused of it if he attempted to commit suicide.

It’s rather sad that we’ve reached the point where Scott Rasmussen even felt compelled to ask this question. Seriously… was this question put to the public about any presidents before Trump? Not that I can recall or find on a quick search. They didn’t even try that one on Nixon.

Disagree with Donald Trump all you like. If you think he’s doing such a terrible job, don’t vote for him next year. But let’s try to maintain just a smidgen of sanity and reason, shall we? Trump’s definitely an unconventional president when compared to his predecessors, but I’m fairly sure the nation was aware of that before he took office. He’s not indebted to the Russians (according to Mueller) and this isn’t the end of the world. If you don’t want Donald Trump to be president, focus on running better candidates.
