"Hostile... aggressive" migrants breach Mexico's southern border, join caravan

Just in case you were worried that we might run out of illegal aliens that the President could ship to sanctuary cities, fear not. The next caravan from Honduras and Guatemala is on the move in southern Mexico and the number of travelers is increasing. They just received hundreds of additional recruits when a mob of significant size broke through the fences at one border crossing, overwhelming police in the area and moving to join the caravan heading north. Rather than peaceful asylum seekers, authorities described them as being hostile and aggressive. (Associated Press)

Mexican authorities said a group of about 350 migrants broke the locks on a border gate Friday and forced their way into southern Mexico to join a larger group of migrants trying to make their way toward the United States.

The National Immigration Institute did not identify the nationalities of the migrants, but they are usually from Central America…

The institute said the migrants were acting in a “hostile” and “aggressive” way, and accused them of also attacking local police in Metapa, a Mexican village that lies between the border and the nearby city of Tapachula.

This latest group brings the number of migrants in that caravan to well over 2,000. They’re heading toward Tapachula, where authorities expect them to wait to be issued documents allowing them to travel north to the United States. Members of the caravan are complaining that Mexico is slow-walking the admission process as well as the distribution of humanitarian aid.

This latest group may have competition in the race to make it to the US border. There’s already another 2,500 strong caravan stuck further to the west in Chiapas. They are similarly awaiting paperwork allowing them to strike out to the north. If the progress of these two groups is similar to what we’ve seen in the past, that could mean more than 5,000 migrants showing up along the border in the same short period, while the US courts and detention centers remain full.

So does that mean that President Trump will begin shipping them out to San Francisco, Oakland and Seattle? He clearly feels he has the legal ability to do so. (The Hill)

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley on Saturday told Fox News shortly before the announcement that the administration was working with DHS and ICE to try to send undocumented immigrants to sanctuary cities.

“They have said they wanted all of these illegal aliens into their communities,” Gidley said while appearing on Fox News’ “Justice with Judge Jeanine.”

“We’re working with DHS, we’re working with ICE, to try and make sure that happens because after all, it’s what they want. They should not say ‘This is retribution politically,’ they should say, ‘This is an olive branch,'” he continued.

I’ve been wondering for a while now why we weren’t spreading out the load in terms of illegal aliens. We have other courts around the country that could be processing some of these cases and if we run out of room to detain them near where they crossed the border. Surely there are more facilities elsewhere. Particularly in the case of the southern California crossing, wouldn’t it make sense to spread them out a bit further north? The Mayor of Seattle has already said that her city “isn’t afraid of immigrants” so it sounds like she’s willing to take some. Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff (who has built a national political profile by fighting Donald Trump and opposing immigration enforcement) just stated in an NPR interview that her city will welcome thousands more “migrants” if necessary.

I understand that everyone wants to turn this into a political food fight. The President knows this fires up his base and the Democrats want to make it out to be an argument about racism. But from the sound of things, we have two sides arguing when they’re actually in complete agreement. Rather than political gamesmanship, this could be a simple matter of reallocation of resources. Ship the illegal aliens to the cities that claim to welcome them and have their courts and detention facilities take some of the burden off the border.
